(No Model.) I h I 1 H. GOLDEN FARB.
CIGARETTE. No. 606,537. Patented June 28, 1898..

I UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY. GOLDENFARB, or. LoNDoN. ENGLAND.
CIGARETTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 606,537, .dated Tune .2
Application filed October 4!, 1897- Serial lie. 654,055.
(No model.) Patented in England September 15, 1893, 1%. 17,387,
and November 2, 1893, No. 20,807, and in Germany November 6, 1894, No. 83,592.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that -I, HENRY GOLDENFARB, a subject of the Queen of England, residing at 21 Great Eastern street,'London, England, '5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Oigarettes,(for which I have received Letters Patentin GreatBritain, No. 17,387, dated September 15, 1893, and No. 20,807 dated November 2, 1893, and in Germany, No. 83,592, dated November ,6; 1894;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The objects of this invention are to make the tips or ends of cigarettes so that they shall not stick when smoking; further, to prevent the nicozo tine from the tobacco inthe cigarettes from entering the mouth.
- According to this'invention I surround the top end of the cigarette with straw, (preferably Japanese straw or the like.) 7 One way of carrying this into effect is to split the- 7 lengths of strawopen and cement such lengths onto linen or paper and then cut the same .into strips (crosswise of the grain) of the desired width and then out same into lengths 3o sufficient -to go round the top end of the cigarette', which lengths may be cemented on.
I'fu'rther roll or otherwise insert a plug of wool, cotton, or any other suitable absorbent material in the cigarette toward the end to be placed in the mouth, but separated from that end by a thickness of tobacco. v
In order that my said invention may be fully understood, I 'will now proceed to describe thesame, with reference to the draw- 0 ings accompanying this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a-view of a cigarette complete;
Fig. 2, adet-ail hereinafter referred to; 3,
to the lips and shall be 0001' an end view at top of cigarette, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section of a; cigarette made according to my invention.
The same letters of reference are employed to denote the same parts in all the views.
a shows the cigarette and b the mouthpiece, consistin g of a piece of straw (preferably Japanese linen c. This is then fixed round the top of the cigarette and forms the mouthpiece.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of mouthpiece, in this figure the linen back obeing'shown uppermost.
at shows the absorbent material. It will be seen that this material is embedded in the tobacco, so as to leave a thickness of the latter between the said material and theupper end of the cigarette, thus keeping thesaid material in position and preventing the heat from the same from reaching the mouth.
I am aware that devices having this latter object have been used in which wool .or other suitable absorbent has been placed in the end'of the cigarette next to the mouth; but this has always proved objectionable, as the 'wool becomes heated or comes away in pieces,
requiring an position.
Having fully described my invention, whatadditional tube to keep'it in I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
A cigar or cigarette having a plug of absorbent material located near the end to be placed in the mouth and also provided with a mouthpiece composed of straw split and cemented to a retaining-band, said mouthpiece being cemented to theoutsid-e of the wrapper of the cigar or cigarette, substantially as described.
