UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
L. L. ARNOLD, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGARETTES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 7.080, dated April 4, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LoUIs L. ARNOLD, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarettes and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of my improved cigarette. Fig. 2 is an isometrical perspective view of the same; and Figs. 3 and 4, a detail view in elevation and perspective, respectively.
Cigarettes as heretofore made consist of tobacco, long or short cut, held within a cylindrical wrapper of paper pasted or glued at the edge or folded at the ends to prevent the wrapper from unrolling. The inconveniences attending the use of such cigarettes are the wetting of the one, which, coming in contact with the lips and the tongue, produces an extremely unpleasant sensation, besides the disintegration of the cigarette, involving the waste of a considerable portion thereof. To partly remedy this, cigarettes were made with a mouth-piece that is to say, a short and perforated cylinder inserted in the wrapper at the end, which is to come in contact with the lips. These also are subject of complaints, of which the principal are the size of the mouthpiece, the liability of its becoming detached, and their staining the fingers and imparting to them a disagreeable odor, which latter in convenience is common to both kinds of cigarettes before mentioned.
The object of this invention is to remedy these evils, and I have accomplished the same by a new mode of constructing cigarettes in the manner substantially as follows:
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents the cigarette proper, consisting of a tobacco-core and a paper wrapper, which is closed at the end where it is intended to be lit by folding or bending the paper from the circumference toward the center. At the op posite end it is closed by means of a monthpiece, 13, which is made of a quill, straw, weed, or other suitable tubular substance, having attached to it at one end aconical plug, 0, which may be made of card-paper, wood, or other proper material. This monthpiece is inserted at the plug end into the wrapper and closes the end nearest to the mouth. I prefer to make the cigarette on a machine for which Letters Patent Were by me applied for. They may be madeof any desirable diameter, so as to hold more or less tobacco, according to the taste of the consumer. The long edge of the cigarette is pasted or glued down, and the mouth-piece is inserted to a depth so as to allow the Wrapper to be pasted or glued over both the plug and a small portion of the quill or the equivalent thereof.
A cheap mode of making the plug consists in rolling a tapering band of card-paper into the shape of a snail-shell, and by pasting a band of thin paper'around the coil at its largest diameter in order to maintain it in shape. I prefer to make the quill of sufficient length to admit of the cigarette being held by the quill.
The advantage of this mode of construction will be apparent to every smoker, for not only are the fingers prevented from being soiled or tainted and the cigarette preserved in its integrity while being smoked, but the smoke itself, by being carried through the quill, is deprived of a larger part of its condensible vapors and arrives in the mouth cooler than is the case when no mouth-piece is used.
Having thus described my invention and the manner in which the same is or may be carried into effect, I would observe that I do not wish to be understood as claiming the plug or the manner of making the same; but
I claim 1. As a new article of manufacture, a cigarette, constructed and combined in the manner described.
2. The method herein described of making the same. I
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscrib ing witnesses.
L. L. ARNOLD.
