RICHARD G. DU BOIS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR AND CIGA'RETTE HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,160, dated "June 3, 1879; application filed December 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD O. DU 1301s, of Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cigar and Cigarette Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvements is to produce a holder for cigars and cigarettes which shall be simple, cheap, and capable of extension and contraction, as also of adjustment for differentsized articles to be held in it.
My invention consists in a holder for cigars and cigarettes, consisting of a tube made by spirally folding a strip of paper, wood, or other suitable substance, and having its outer end fastened to themain body, but having its coils otherwise left free to permit their adjustment relatively to each other.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a holder embodying my improve ments, showing it used for a cigar. Fig. 2 is a side view of such holder partially contracted. Fig. 3 is a side view of such holder with its outer portion adjusted. for holding a cigarette, and Fig. 4 is a side view of such holder entire] y contracted to render it convenient to carry in the pocket.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My holder consists of a strip of paper, wood, or other analogous material, A, wound spirally into a conical tube, and having its outer end (and preferably, also, its inner end)fastcned, to
precludeitfrom unwinding and losing its shape. It needs really only to be secured at the larger end, and may be secured by simply gumming that end,or by an outer wrapper, B, encircling it and attached by mucilaginous material. This outer wrapper may; be made ornamental, and may have names or devices or advertisements delineated upon it.
Preferably the material employed for the manufacture of this holder will be of an absorbent nature, so as to take up the nicotine and all other deleterious matters emanating from cigars or cigarettes during smokin The edges of the material presented on the inside of the tube render the material more absorbent than it otherwise would be, not only because additional surface is by them pre sented, but also because the edges are more absorptive, especially when the material employed is calendered paper.
By pulling the ends of the holder longitudinally it may be extended to any desirable length, as shown in Fig. 1, or by pushing the ends toward each other may be partially contracted, as shown in Fig. 2.
Moreover, by pushing one end of the holder toward the other, several coils may be forced together, and the internal diameter of the outer end of the holder decreased in diameter internally, whereby it is adapted for holding a small cigar or cigarette, as shown in Fi 3.
By pushing both ends sufliciently together, the coils may be all forced into one another into convolute form, rendering the cigar-holder compact and convenient to be carried in the pocket.
It will be seen that by my invention I produce a very simple and desirable cigar-holder, which can be manufactured so cheaply that it may be thrown away after a single use, if desirable.
The manufacture of such cigar-holders by cutting, rolling, and gumming strips of material may be carried on by means of machinery.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A holder for cigars and cigarettes, consisting of a tube made by spirally folding a strip of paper, wood, or other suitable substance, and having its outer end fastened to the main body, but having its coils otherwise left free to permit their adjustment relatively to each other.
In testimony that I consider thewithin-described improvements to be my invention I hereunto subscribe my name.
RICHARD O. DU BOIS.
Witnesses N10 GRANDPRE, E. HALLENSTEIN.
