ROBERT E. BRINTON, OF WEST HAMPSTEAD, LONDON, ENGLAND.
CIGARETTE AND THE LIKE.
Application filed March 19, 1915.
T 0 all wiwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT Euro BRIN- roix', a subject of His l\lajesty the King of England, residing at West Hampstead, in the county of London, Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Connected with Cigarettes and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in or connected with cigarettes, cigars, cheroots and similar articles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a cigarette, cigar, cheroot or similar article with improved and inexpensive means whereby the tobacco thereof is prevented from entering the mouth of the smoker, and the use of a separate holder is unnecessary.
Another object of the invention is to produce' a mouthpiece so constructed that though it is suiiiciently rigid to prevent itcollapsing while the cigarette, cigar, che' root or similar article is being smoked it is still suiiiciently flexible to cause said article to resemble an ordinary one. At the same time the mouthpiece does not need to be fixed. with adhesive substance, and does not add to the weight of the cigarette, cigar, cheroot or similar article.
The invention will now be described with. reference to the accompanying drawings, in.
which Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of crinkled paper or other material; and Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional elevation respectively of a cigarette or cheroot showing the invention applied thereto. Fig. 4 is an edge view of a modified construction of the crinkled paper or other material, and Fig. 5 is also .an edge view showing same ready for insertion into the end of a cigarette, cigar, cheroot or similararticle.
According to the invention a short lengtl a of crinkled or corrugated paper or other suitable material such as cardboard, fiber, papienmach, is bent around and attached to, inserted in, or formed with one end of the cigarette or cheroot b or the cigar or other article, to serve as, or part of, the improved mouthpiece.
As shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the crinkled or corrugated paper or other material a is preferably inclosed within a small tube or ring 0 made of a separate piece of plain stifi paper Specification of Letters Patent.

or other suitable material, such as cardboard, fiber, papier mach, which tube or ring is inserted into, formed with, or attached to one end of the cigarette or cheroot Z) or the cigar or other article.
If desired, and as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the crinkled member a and the tube or ring 0 may be integral and made of one piece of mater al. The ends of the paper or other material forming the tube or ring 0 need not necessarily be joined together, but may be overlapped if desired.
lhe crinkled or corrugated member a, which gives a suitable degree of flexibility to the mouthpiece, would allow for the free passage of smoke while at the same time effectively preventing pieces of tobacco enter- 1ng the mouth, and the tube or ring 0 would provide the necessary sup'portfor the end of tllie cigarette, cigar, cheroot or similar artic e. parts of the mouth-piece would serve as a filter for the smoke, and prevent the cigarette, cigar, cheroot or similar article being soiled by saliva.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is 1. As an article of manufacture, a mouthpiece for cigarettes and the like comprising an inclosing member and an internal mem ber formed to provide a relatively large central passage star-shaped in cross section and a plurality of outer passages having diverging side walls between the walls of the starshaped passage and the walls of the inclosing member, the outer edges of said diverging walls engaging the interior walls of the inclosing member at substantially equidistant points to brace the walls of the inclosing member.
2. As an article of manufacture, a mouthpiece for cigarettes and the like comprising an inclosing member and an internal member formed to provide a relatively large central passage star-shaped in cross section and a plurality of outer unrestricted passages havlng diverging side walls between the walls of the star-shaped passage and the walls of the inclosing member.
3. As an article of manufacture, a mouth piece for cigarettes and the like comprising a strip of flexible material crinkled intermediate its ends only with the crinkled portion arranged to provide a relatively large central passage star-shaped in cross section confined within the end portions of the flexi- If made from absorbent material the ble strip to provide a plurality of openrestrictedouter passages between the Walls ended passages between said central passage of the star-shaped passage and the walls of and the end portions of said strip. the inclosing member.
