Be it known that we, ARMINPOLLAK and PHILIP F. TEISER, citizens of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigars, of which the following is a specification.

sists in a cigar comprising a bunch, a removable longitudinally-disposed fragrant tobacco-stem resting in the longitudinal center of the bunch and extended from the mouth end thereof, and a wrapper surrou ndin g the bunch and the extended portion of the tobaccostem.

Irrespective of the material of which the stick is formed the invention consists in the combination of the bunch, a removable stick resting in the longitudinal center of the bunch and extended from the month end thereof, and a wrapper surrounding the bunch and the extended portion of the stick whereby the end of the wrapper is held against casual unwrapping and the extended end of the stick is covered and the stick is held against casual movement or displacement.

The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in conjunction with the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section ofacigarembodyingourimprovements. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the stick removed from the cigar. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section illustrating a slight modification of the invention.

Referring by letter to said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, A is the bunch of a cigar, B is the wrapper, and O is the stick. The bunch A may be and preferably is composed of scrap-tobacco, which may be of an inferior grade, and is rolled or formed around the stick .0, which preferably occupies the longitudinal center of the cigar and is of a greater length than the bunch, so as to extend from that end of the same which is designed to be lighted slightly beyond the mouth end, as indicated by a. The wrapper B is applied to the bunch in the usual manner, being rolled around said bunch and extended beyond the month end of the same in order to cover the extended portion a of the stick, to which it is pasted, if necessary, to hold it against casual unwrapping and at the same time prevent oasual movement or displacement of the stick.

The stick 0 may be formed of any suitable material, although fragrant material which will impart its fragrance to the tobacco and Our invention relates to cigars; and it conthus materially improve the flavor of the same is preferred. A material eminently adapted to the purpose is the stem of Havana or other fine quality of tobacco-leaf, which, while easily procurable and cheap, is fragrant, and is calculated to impart its fragrance and fine flavor to the inferior quality of tobacco composing the bunch A, and thereby materially improve the flavor of the cigar as a whole.

As before stated, the stick C is arranged to occupy the longitudinal center of the cigar. Consequently it tends to hold the scrap-tobacco away from the longitudinal center of the cigar, where the same is liable to pack tightly, and when it is withdrawn it leaves a clear smoke-passage in the cigar and enables the same to smoke freely. The stick also serves to lessen the liability of the cigar bending, and thereby prevents breaking of the wrapper, which ordinarily attends bending of the cigar.

When it is desired to withdraw the stick 0 of tobacco-stem from the cigar, it is simply necessary to break the wrapper B at about the point marked b, when the portion a of the stem may be grasped in the fingers and said stem easily pulled out of the cigar. This may be done without injury to the cigar and leaves the same ready to be smoked.

The construction shown in Fig. 3 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1, except that the extended portion 0L of the stick 0, with the wrapper covering the same, is bent so as to lie at right angles or approximate right angles to the main portion of the stem and the cigar and afford a finger-grasp .to facilitate the withdrawal of the stick from the cigar. Such bending of the stick of tobacco-stem may be readily effected after the same is slightly dampened.

In the several embodiments of our invention the stick is tapered to a point at its inner end. This is done, when the stick is formed of a tobacco-stem, by moistening and rolling the stem to a point.

It is desirable to have the sticks tapered toward their inner ends, since it permits of their being easily withdrawn from cigars without liability of tearing or otherwise damaging the same.

Having described our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a cigar, the bunch, the tobacco-stein calculated to impart its fragrance to the tobacco forming the bunch; said stein occupying the longitudinal center of the bunch and extended beyond the month end of the same so that it may be drawn out to form a draftpassage, and a wrapper surrounding the bunch and the extended portion of the t0- baceo-stem, substantially as specified.

2. The combination in a cigar, of the bun eh, a removable stick occupying the longitudinal center of the bunch and extended beyond the month end of the same so that it may be drawn out to form a draft-passage, and a wrapper surrounding the bunch and the extended portion of the stick, substantially as specified.
