JOHN C. SIMERING, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CIGARETTE-WRAPPER.
'srnczimcnrron forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,003, dated August e, 1901.
Application filed May 31, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. SIMERING,Of thecity of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have inventedcertain Improvements in Cigarette-Wrappers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the peculiar construction of a cigarette paper or wrapper, whereby it is adapted to cooperate with a device in the inclosure of the tobacco filler during the formation of a hand-made cigarette; and the said invention consists in providing the cigarette paper or wrapper with a permanent hollow pasted fold adapted to receive a flat rod, whereby after the distribution of the tobacco filler on the paper the said folded edge is-drawn over the tobacco and held thereat until the! other edge is made to cover it. The said rod is then withdrawn and the hollow fold closed or flattened by pressure in the usual rolling operation to which handmade cigarettes are subjected.
In the further description of the said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings; forming a part hereof, and in which-'- Figure 1 is a view illustrating the practical application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved cigarette paper wrapper and the rolling up device as they appear in the first step of the cigarette-making operation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line A A. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the completed cigarette.
Referring now to thefdrawings, 1 is a cigarette paper wrapper having the permanent pasted hollow fold 2, effected, preferably, by
Serial No. 62,460. (No model.)
means of the pasted joint 3 at the extreme edge of the portion of the paper which is folded over. These paper wrappers, like others of ordinary description, are bound into books, from which they are separately removed for use.
4 is a small flat rod adapted to be inserted in the pasted hollow fold 2, and it may have a handle 5, whereby it is turned in the forma tion of the cigarette, as shown in Fig. 1. The tobacco filler is denoted by 6.
The operation of forming a cigarette in accordance with the present invention is as fol lows: A wrapper having been torn from the book, the rod 4 is inserted in the fold 2 from one end thereof, as shown in Fig. 2, and the requisite quantity of tobacco spread upon the wrapper. The unfinished cigarette is then grasped between the forefinger and thumb of the left hand and the rolling-up rod by the right hand, as shown in Fig. 1. The rod is then turned, so as to draw the folded edge of the wrapper over the inclosed tobacco, after which the lap is formed. The rolling-up rod 4 is then withdrawn from the fold, which becomes flattened as the cigarette is rolled between the fingers to compress the filler and tighten the wrapper thereon.
I claim as my invention-*- A cigarette-wrapper having at one lateral edge thereof, a permanent pasted, vacant hollow fold adapted to receive a rolling-up rod, substantially as,and for the purpose specified.
JOHN C. SIMERING.
