- ATTORNEY UNrTE STATES ATENT Price.
ADOLPH MOONELIS, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BENJAMIN LIOHTENSTEIN, OF SAME PLACE.
CIGAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 456,312, dated July 21, 1891.
Application filed December 30, 1890. Serial NO. 3761210. (No model.)
ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cigars, having among other things a shape whichwill enable them to belighted at either end.
My invention has special reference to improvements in cigars or cigarettes which have a wrapper spirally disposed around them in the usual manner, the wrapper being fastened at one end, known as the tuck, by binding the end of the wrapper between the fold, and
at the other end by pasting the wrapperdown so as to secure it. WVhen the cigar is so constructed-that is, with the wrapper so arrangedit can be only lighted at one endthatis, thetuck end-and even if itshould be desired to light it at the other end, upon doing so it will be found that the wrapper will run fold from the bunch.
In a cigar made according to my invention the wrapper will not unfold, but may be ignited at either end alike.
In the manufacture of my cigar I do not limit myself to the use of either what is known as scrap or long filler tobacco, as either may be used.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation of a cigar or cigarette made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
In the manufacture of my cigar I take either scrap or long filler, make the bunch or interior part of the cigar, and place it within a mold or work it by hand, which gives to the bunch the desired shape. The wrapper A is then spirally disposed about the bunch in the manner hereinafter set forth. The cigar is now shaped and ready for use. This shape is as represented in the drawings, in which B is the bunch and A the wrapper. It will be there seen that on line 1 2 the cigar is, in the terms of the art, bellied orincreased in diameter. This belly is located substantially semidistant from the ends 3 4; The mold confers upon the bunch a further shape, which consists in gradually decreasing the size of the cigar from the belly 1 2 down to the extreme ends 3 4 of the cigar, which are smaller than the belly, the decrease in the size taking place on both sides of the belly in equal portions-that.is, the cigar has, according to my invention, a central belly and a contour from the belly to the ends, which cromprises a section of gradually-decreasing diameter to the apex'of the same. The ends 3 4 are squared, as shown, leaving the cigar ready for use without cutting. Of course allowance must be made for slight changes which may be wrought upon the bunch in handling and in placing the wrapper around the cigar. This shape has many novel features, among the foremost being that it makes the cigar combustible at either end-that is, a person may take the cigar and light it at either end with out having to query as to which end he shall light.
Smoking articles which have been made so that they can be lighted from either end, as far as I know, have never assumed the shape of a cigar, but have simply been made in the form of a cylinder, being made large or small according as they are to be used as cigars, cigarettes, or cheroots; but a cigar or cigarette made according to my invention and having this structural character, with or without a spirally-disposed wrapper, has all the necessary requirementsof a regularly made cigar.
In order toinsure the retention of the wrapper upon the cigar, I apply to the edges 5 of the wrapper, either prior to being rolled around the bunch or during the process of .-rolling, gum or other adhesive material, which will secure the coils of the wrapper upon each other and prevent the same from becoming unwound as the cigar or cigarette is burned from either end.
I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture, acigar having'its greatest diameter centrally located,
and decreasing in diameter therefrom equally in both directions and terminatingin blunt and open ends smaller than the central sec- 5 tion, substantially as described.
2. A mass of tobacco, comprising an internal bunch or filler and a Wrapper spirally disposed around it, the said mass being of the greatest diameter in the center and decreas- [0 in g in diameter therefrom equally in both direct-ions, terminatingin blunt and open ends smaller than the central section, substantially as described.
Signed at the city, county, and State ol' New York, this 15th day of December, 1890.
