NAPOLEON DU BRUL, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CIGAR OR CIGARETTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 657,403, dated September 4, 1900.
Application filed June 24, 1899- Serial No. 721,756. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Small Cigars or Cigarettes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the manufacture of small cigars or cigarettes of the character commonly known as all-tobacco cigarettes, in which the filler is generally made up of short or cut tobacco of good quality, designated as scrap. Cigars or cigarettes of this character when made shaped, or with enlarged diameter between the ends, have always been provided with a binder as well as a wrapper. Such shaped all-tobacco cigarettes are recognized in the market as an entirely distinct article from the straight cylindrical cigarette. tured they have always been made with both a binder and a wrapper. The use of a binder in these small articles is objectionable, because it is made of a lower grade of material, and under the limit of weight prescribed by the internal-revenue laws this inferior binder forms too large a proportion of the article, and therefore reduces the commercial value of the product.
One feature of my invention consists in 'making an all-tobacco cigarette out of a shaped short or cut tobacco-filler with but a single piece of leaf serving as both binder and wrapper, whereby I am enabled to make up the bulk of the article of the good filler material. 7
Another feature of my invention consists in forming the wrapper with a curved pasting edge, whereby I am enabled to produce a small cigar or cigarette having a much larger As heretofore manufac- Figure 1 represents a shaped filler made up ofshort or cut filler material. Fig. 2 is a plan of my preferred form of wrapper, which is used without a binder. Fig. 3 is a view representing the finished article. Fig. trepresents a straight cylindrical filler made up of cut or short filler material. Fig. 5 is a plan of wrapper which may be used in connection with a straight cylindrical filler and which embodies the feature of the curved pasting edge. Fig. 6 is a view'of a finished cylindrical cigarette-in which the wrapper has a curved pasting edge. a
A represents a shaped filler made up of short or cut filler material, the intermediate diameter of which is larger than that of the ends. This shaped filler may be given one of the numerous cigar-shape forms, and it is wrapped in a single piece of leaf B without the interposition of a binder. The wrapper B is preferably formed with a curved starting edge 1, which adapts the wrapper to be rolled in a direction normal to the axis of the filler and to conform to the enlargement between the ends. Said wrapper is likewise provided with a curved pasting edge 2, which when the wrapper is applied assumes a position substantially longitudinal of the fillerthat is, with the chord of the edges curve running longitudinally of the filler. The result of applying the wrapper B to the fillerA is illustrated in Fig. 3.
The feature of the curved pasting edge is applicable to straight or cylindrical fillers with some of the advantages incident to its use of the shaped filler. I therefore do not confine myself to the use of this particular feature on a shaped filler; but I may use an approximately-rectangular Wrapper B, Fig. 5, upon a straight cylindrical filler. A, Fig. 4, with the result shown by the finished article in Fig. 6.
Cigars or cigarettes constructed in accord ance with the above description will avoid the use of a binder, will have a very much larger appearance in comparison to the weight of the article, and will permit the use of a very much larger, proportion of good filler IOO Having thus described my invention the itsourved edges substantially longitudinal of following is what I claim as'new therein and the cigar or cigarette;
desire to secure by Letters Patent: V Y
A combined binder and'wrapper for cigars a 5 01' cigarettes having a curved starting edge I Witnesses: I
and a curved pasting edge adapted to be WALTER. ALLEN, wound straight about a filler so as to bring EDWIN S. OLARKSON.
