PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS MARSH, OF ASHLAND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO; BURRELL HYDE MARSH, OF I/VINSTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
PLANT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 778,688, dated December 27, 1904.
Application filed June 1,1904. Serial No. 210,722.
To (all who/2'1, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CYRUS MARsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Hanover and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plant-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in plant-protectors; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which can be readily placed in position about a plant and which will protect the same from frost and injurious insects.
The invention consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plant-protector. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section therethrough. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the protector prior to being folded. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of protector. Fig. 5 is a central vertical section thcretlu'ough, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the strip from which said protector is formed.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a strip of waterproof cardboard, metal, or any other suitable material, which is adagted to be bent along the dotted lines 2 to produce folds 3 and 4:. The end fold 3 has hooked extensions 5 thereon and integral therewith, which are adapted when the strip has been folded to project into and engage the ends of slots 6, which are formed in aflap same time will not exclude the light. The protector is slightly embedded within the ground, so as to prevent it from being displaced by wind.
Instead of providing an angular protector, such as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, a round one may be used, such as shown in the remaining figures of the drawings. form is constructed of a strip 10 of any suitable material, the ends of said strip being inclined. Hooked extensions 11 are arranged at one end of the strip, while slots 12 are formed adjacent the other end. In using this protector the same is folded about the plant and the hooks 11 are placed within the slots 12. An inverted-frusto-conical protector is thus prod uced, and a circular piece of glass 13 may, if desired, be placed in the upper or large end thereof. Instead of providing glass for covering the top of the protector, any suitable cloth may be used, or, if desired, in the modification shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 a disk of cardboard or other like material may be employed instead of glass.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but[ do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be'made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A plant-protector comprising a strip adapted to be folded about a plant and having slots adjacent one end, hooks at the other end of the strip adapted to project into the slots, and a transparent closure detachably mounted in one end of the protector.
2. A plant protector comprising a strip adapted to fold about a plant and having slots adjacent one end, hooks projecting from the other end and adapted to be seated within the slots, and a removable closure mounted within oppositely-disposed slots at the upper end of the protector.
This last-mentioned 3. A plant-protector comprising a strip 5 slots, and a removable transparent closure seated Within the slots adjacent the top of the protector.
In testimony WhereofI affix my signature in presence of tWo wltnesses.
CYRUS MARSH.
