UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES B. WANAMAKER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO LEEDY MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
RETAINING-RING FOR DRUM-COVERS.
Patented Jan. 20, 1914.
Application filed October 14, 1912. Serial No. 725,703.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES B. \VANA- MAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Retaining-Ring for Drum-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of my invention to provide a drum cover which protects the drum from inclement weather without interfering with its use while so protected.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drum covered with my improved water-proof cover; Fig. 2 shows a fragment of the retaining ring, illustrating the adjustment thereof; and Fig. 3 is a section through the drum, showing how the drum cover fits closely against the drum head.
The drum 10, having upper and lower heads 11 and 12, is of any usual construction. My improved cover, for protecting such a drum from the weather, comprises a disk-shaped top 15, somewhat larger in diameter than is the drum, and a skirt 16 sewed or otherwise attached to the disk 15 at the circumference and depending therefrom a considerably greater distance than the length of the drum. Both the top 15 and the skirt- 16 are of suitable waterproof fabric. This cover is placed over the drum and the top 15 is held down tightly against the head 11 by a flexible metal band 17 which fits inside of the upper hoop 18 of the drum. The two ends of the band overlap, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the band being provided near one end with a plurality of tabs 19, 19 bent inward from the hoop and at the other end with a pivoted finger 20, the free end of which may be made to cooperate with any desired one of the tabs 19.
In placing the cover on the drum, the band 17 is used to push the top 15 of the 1 cover tightly against the head 11, the finger 20 is placed in engagement with a suitable one of the tabs 19, and the toggle formed by the finger 20 and that end of the band 17 to which it is attached is sprung outward to lock the band in place tightly against the hoop 18. The band now holds the top 15 of the cover tightly against the drum head 11, so that the drum may be played in the usual manner. The skirt 16 depends a considerable distance below the bottom of the drum,
thus largely or wholly preventing the splashing of water or mud thereupon.
In order to enable the drummer to carry his drum, the top 15 and skirt 16 are left separated at one point for a sufficient distance to allow the insertion of the usual drum-supporting strap, and at the opening thus formed the top 15 and skirt 16 are provided with cooperating flaps 21 and 22 provided with suitable fasteners 23, conveniently ordinary glove fasteners. The two flaps 21 and 22 are fastened together by such fasteners after the supporting strap has been attached to the drum and effectually prevent entrance of moisture.
I claim as my invention:
A drum cover comprising a top fitting over the top of the drum, and a skirt surrounding the body of the drum, and a flexible expansion band adapted to fit inside the top hoop of the drum and to hold the top of the cover against the drum head, said band having overlapping ends one of which is provided with a series of teeth and the other of which is provided with a hinged portion which may be made to engage with any desired one of such teeth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 5th day of September, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and twelve.
CHARLES B. WANAMAKER.
