I M PROVEMENT IN HAT-BOXES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,024, dated December 11, 1877; application filed October 12, 1877.

' To all whom it may concern:

Be it known, that I, FREDERIG JINKINs, of Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Boxes, of which the following is'a specification:

Figure 1 is a top view of one of my improved hat-boxes, the cover being removed, and partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, taken through the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section, showing a modification of the cover.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to furnish boxes for felt and fur hats, which shall be so constructed as to prevent the hat from getting out of place, turning around, and chafing the binding or rim, and enable the boxes to be nested when filled and packed in the cases.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.

A represents the body of the box; and B is its flange, offset, or projecting part, that receives the rim. of the hat. The body A is made somewhat oval in cross-section, so that the hat will not turn around in it; and its edge projects above the flange B, as shown in Fig. 2, for the rim of the hat to rest upon to prevent the said rim or itsbinding from being rubbed or chafed.

In makingthe box, the body A is scored at a little distance from its upper end, and is turned over upon itself. The flange B is scored at a little distance from its inner edge, and is turned or bent upward. The turnedup edge of the flange B is slipped between the turned-down edge of the body A, and the said body and the overlapping parts are glued together.

To the outer part of the flan geB is attached an upwardly-projecting band to receive the cover 0, which is formed by attaching a downwardly-projecting band to the outer edge of a sheet of straw-board of the proper shape.

With this construction, the hat-body fits into the body A of the box, and the rim of the hat rests upon the upper edge of the body A, so that the hat will be held securely'in place, will be prevented from turning or shaking around, and from rubbing or chafing the rim or binding.

The cover 0 may be provided with a downwardly projecting body, 0, in the same way as the box A B, except that it should be shallower, and which is designed to enter the body of the hat placed in the said box.

This construction not only keeps the hats more securely in place, but it also enables the boxes, When filled and packed in a case, to be nested, so as to greatly economize space.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Ahat-box having its body extended above the base of the rim, formed with a lip or flange, and adapted to engage with a flange on the rim portion, as and for the purpose specified.
