I M. E. O. HOPKIRK;
HAT PROTECTOR.
No. 357,200. v Patented Feb. 8, 1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT Grinch.
MARY ETTA OOWLES HOPKIRK, OF AGENCY, IOWA.
HAT-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,200, dated February 8, 1887.
Application filed Apiil19, 1886.
. T"a ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MARY ETTAYCOWLES HOPKIRK, of Agency, in the county of Wapello and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to hat-protectors intended particularly for covering ladies headwear, and has for its object to provide a sim ple, inexpensive, portable, and readily-adj ustable device of this character which may be quickly applied to and removed from a hat or bonnet without injuring its delicate trimmings, and may be adjusted to fit small or large hats with facility.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts of the hat-protector, all as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate.
corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is an under side View of the hatprotector in open condition. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation of the protector with the extension or enlarging piece attached and drawn in at the lower edge as when in use, and Fig. 3is an inside face view of a portion'of the extensionpiece.
The main body portion A ofthe hat-protector, which alone will be used to cover hats of small or medium size, consists of a piece of some light water-proof fabric--such as rubber cloth, oiled silk, or the 1ikeand preferably bound around the margin at the inside with a facing, a, of some suitable fabric, adding strength to the water-proof material of the covering.
At the inner face of the body fabric A, Isecure,in any suitable manner, a couple of narrow strips, B B, of suitable fabric, forming casings through which draw strings or tapes 0 C are run.
At opposite edges of the facing a are attached series of small rings,D E, respectively, through either series of which rings a cord or draw string, as at F, may be passed and then drawn up and tied, as presently explained.
The extension-piece G of the hat-protector consists of an endless strip or band of light water-proof fabric, like that of the body fabric A, and preferably hemmed over or provided Serial No. 199,341. (No model.) i
at opposite edges at the inside with bindings or facings g g, to which are attached the series of rings HI, respectively, through which cords may be passed.
When the protector is to be used on asmall or medium sized hat or bonnet, the draw-strings C will be tightened more or less to conform the body A of the protector somewhat to the size and shape of the hat, and the strings G will be tied. The draw'strin g Fhaving been adjusted in the marginal series of rings D, the protector fabric A will be laid gently over the hat or bonnet, and the string F will then be drawn up and tied to hold the protector to place.
- To apply the protector to a large hat' orbonnet, the draw-strings G will be properly ad justed and tied, and the draw-string F will be removed from the rings D of. the bodyA of the protector, and will be run through the series of rings I at one edge of the eXtension-pieceG, and another d raw-string, the inner series .of rings E on the body fabric A, and also through the series of rings H at the upper edge of the extension-piece G, the rings E H being of like number, and whereby, when the string J is drawn into the proper size and tied, the extensi0n-piece G will be held to the body part A, and the latter will overlap the piece G allaround for a distance equaling the space between the two series of ringsD E, or about the width of the facing a, or for a sufficient distance to prevent rain and snow from beating through at the top of the piece G onto the hat or bonnet, over which the pro tector thus arranged will be p1aced,whereupon There may be but one draw-string 0,0rmore than two, fitted into casings in the body fabric A, as the size of the latter may require; but two, as shown, will ordinarily be used.
It is obvious that a hat-protectormade with draw-strings atits inner face around the crown -and after the strings are properly adjusted to shape the crown of the protector-may be applied Qver a hat without danger of crushing frail-trimmings on the hat, which would not be possible with protectors intendedto be applied over a hat prior to tightening up and tying a single marginal string. Furthermore the draw-string F, now in the rings I, will ,be
the marginal rings, through which the fastening draw-string F is run, allow the string to be tightened easily and quickly without twisting the protector around on top of the headwear, and whereby damaging strains on the hat trimmings are avoided, which would not be the case if a string or elastic were used within a draw-casing. Furthermore, by placing the draw-strings 0 within the casings B on the body part A of the protector, the draw-strings will not beliable to eatchnpon andinjure delicate trimmings when the protector is removed from the hat, as will readily be understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hat-protector made with an imperferate body portion formed from flexible waterproof fabrie, and with drawstrings applied around the crown of the protector upon its in nor face, substantially as herein set forth.
2. A hat-protector made with an imperforate body portion formed from flexible waterproof fabrie, and with draw-strings applied around the crown of the protector and within casings secured upon the inner face of the protector, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. A hat-protector made with an inipcrforate body portion formed from flexible waterproof fabric, and provided with marginal rings to receive a fastening draw-string, substantially as herein set forth.
4. A hat-protector made .with a body portion, A, formed from flexible waterproof fabric, and provided with draw-strings, as at 0, around the crown, and with marginal rings, as at D, to receive a fastening draw-string, substantiall y as herein set forth.
5. A hat-protector made with a body portion, A, having a series of rings, E, Within its margin, and with an extension-piece, G, provided with rings H I at opposite edges, a drawstring, J, uniting rings E H, and a fastening drawstring, as at F, passed through rings I, substantially as herein set forth.
6. A hatprotector made with an imperforate body portion, A, formed from flexible wa' terproof fabric, and provided with crown draw-strings G and two series of marginal rings, D E, and with an extension-piece, G, provided with rings H I at opposite edges, a draw-string, J, uniting rings E H, and a fastening draw-strin g, as at F, passed through the rings 1, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
