(Cl. 2-175) The present invention relates to a novelty hat and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.

Generally there is provided a hat or cap which has aflixed thereon a plurality of vertically spaced hollow rings of transparent material in each of which there is positioned one or more balls which are free to move therein. The balls may be colored either differently or alike and the rings may be formed of endless tubing or by channeled members. As desired, the balls or the rings may be filled or partially filled with preferably colored fluid. The device is such that, when worn upon the head of the user, the balls will be in constant motion within the rings due to the movements of the users head thus providing a novel, interesting and attractive headgear.

It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a hat having a plurality of objects mounted therein which objects are adapted to be moved by the motions of the head of the wearer.

Another object of the invention is to provide, in a device of the character set forth, novel hollow rings forming a part of the invention.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a plurality of freely mounted balls forming a part of the invention.

Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly broken away, of an embodiment of the invention,

Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof,

Figure 3 is a sectional view, somewhat reduced, taken along the line 3-3 of Figure 2,

Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view of the device illustrated in Figure 1 illustrating a certain ring construction forming part of the invention,

Figure 5 is a figure similar to Figure 4 but showing a modified form the invention may assume.

Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 5 but showing a still further modification of the invention.

, Figure 7 is an elevational view of a ball utilized in the invention, and

Figure 8 is a vertical sectional view of a modified form of the elements shown in Figure 7.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a hat or cap having upwardly and illwardly extending sides 10 and a flat integrally formed top 11 adapted to fit over the top of a wearers head in conventional manner, such head being indicated in dotted lines at 12. The hat may be formed of fabric or of any other suitable material and is provided on its outer side with a plurality of vertically spaced circumferentially extending rings each generally designated at 13.

The rings 13 are formed of transparent material preferably of a colored plastic and each is provided with a hollow rounded channel 14 and a pair of outwardly extending flange portions 15, the latter being adapted to be glued or otherwise affixed to the outer face of the hat 10. In Figure 6, the ring 1.3 is identical with that shown, for example, in Figure 4, with the exception that the channel 16 therein provided is of triangular cross sectional area.

In another form the invention may assume, instead of the channeled members 13 there is provided endless Patented May 29, 1956 tubular rings 17 likewise preferably formed of transparent and colored plastic material and which are aflixed to the hat as by threads 18 looped thereover and fastened into the hat.

A hollow dome 19 may be affixed to the top 11 and is of generally frusto-conical shape. The dome is provided with a decorative member 20 atop the same and with a plurality of vertically spaced rings 21 which are preferably smaller in cross sectional area than the

13 or 17.

In all of the rings above described there is provided one or more balls 22 which are preferably of hollow construction and exteriorly colored as, for example, the colored ball shown in Figure 7 and may, if desired, be filled with a liquid 23 as shown in Figure 8. Alternatively, the tubes 17 may be filled with colored liquids and the balls 22 mounted in such liquid.

In all forms of the invention, it will be apparent that as the head 12 of the user is moved in a normal manner, the balls 22 will move about in their respective rings much the amusement of onlookers. it will also be apparent that as the balls in any one ring collide, minute sounds or clicks will emanate from the hat so that the same will be amusing to the car as well as the eyes of the observer.

While only certain forms of the invention have been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

1. A hat having a crown, a ring of transparent material, said ring being U-shaped in cross-sectional area, a pair of outwardly divergent flanges each integrally formed with the free end of a leg of said ring and attached to said crown, said ring forming a tunnel with said crown, and a ball freely mounted in said ring.

2. A hat having a crown provided with upwardly and inwardly extending sides, a ring of transparent material, said ring being U-shaped in cross-sectional area presenting its bight portion outwardly and having a rela tively long upper leg and a relatively short lower leg, an integrally formed outwardly extending flange at the free end of each leg, each flange being attached to said crown, said ring forming a tunnel with said crown, and a ball freely mounted in said tunnel.

3. A hat having a crown, a plurality of vertically spaced horizontally extending inwardly opening channeled rings of transparent material mounted upon the outer side of said crown, said rings each forming a tunnel with said crown, and a ball freely mounted in each of said tunnels.

4. A hat having a crown, a ring of transparent material, said ring being formed from a strip folded to have a pair of legs the ends of which are spaced apart, a pair of outwardly divergent flanges each integrally formed with the free end of a leg of said ring and attached to said crown, said ring forming a tunnel with said crown, and a ball freely mounted in said ring.
