Abstract
The invention relates to a device for attenuating sound from percussion instruments at certain frequencies, at least in certain directions. The device comprises a damping element of fabric which is intended to be arranged around the circumference of a percussion instrument. The damping element extends below the lower surface of the percussion instrument and may also extend above the upper surface of the percussion instrument. The invention further relates to such a device where the damping element is provided with an attachment device for attaching the damping element to the percussion instrument.
Description
Sound controller for percussion instruments
The present invention relates to a sound controller for percussion instruments according to the introductory portions of the independent claim.
Background of the invention
Many percussion instruments emit intense sound, particularly at certain frequency band, which may overload recording equipment and be annoying or hazardous to human ears. Different methods of overcoming this problem have been suggested, for example may the equalizer of a recording system be set such that the frequencies that are annoying or cause overloading are attenuated in the recording equipment. Using this method does however lessen the quality of the recorded sound.
Devices have also been suggested mat mechanically attenuate the batter head movement at certain frequencies, such as disclosed in i.a. US-A-6291754 where the device is held against the batter head and thereby controls the sound for all positions.
An object of the invention is therefore to provide a sound controller for percussion instruments which overcome the above mentioned problems with prior art sound controllers.
These and other objects are attained by a sound controller for percussion instruments according to the characterising portions of the independent claim.
Summary of the invention
The invention relates to a device for attenuating sound from percussion instruments at certain frequencies, at least in certain directions. The device comprises a damping element in tihe form of a sheet of La. fabric which is intended to be arranged around the circumference of a percussion instrument. The damping element extends below the lower surface of the percussion instrument and may also extend above the upper surface of the percussion instrument.
The invention further relates to such a device where the damping element is provided with an attachment device for attaching the damping element to the percussion instrument.

Description of preferred embodiments
Fig. 1 shows a snare drum 1 without the sound controller 2, 3 and fig. 2 shows the same snare drum 1 with an embodiment of the sound controller 2, 3 attached to the drum 1. The sound controller 2, 3 comprises an attachment device 3 which is strapped around the drum and thereby holds the sound controller in place. The attachment device may be embodied by Velcro bands for easy attachment around the drum. The sound controller 2, 3 further comprises a damping part 2 which extends from the side of the drum and below it, which attenuates the sound. In the illustrated embodiment the attenuation part 2 only extends along part of the circumference of the drum and it will then primarily attenuate sound the emanates in a specific direction from the drum. This may be utilised to only attenuate sound that is emitted in the direction of a microphone and leave sound emitted in other directions unchanged.
The sound controller according to the invention is particularly advantageous for use with snare drums as these have snares aligned below the bottom head. The snares consists of tightly tensioned metal threads and when these interact with the movement of the bottom head very intense high frequency sound components are emitted which are hard to handle both for recording purposes and for listening purposes. The sound controller partially delimits the emission of the sound components that occur as a result of the interaction of the snares with the moving bottom head and attenuates the part of these sound components that propagates from the snare drum.
The damping part 2 is preferably made by a material that attenuates chosen frequencies, and it may for example be made from fabric or some other porous attenuating substance. Typically the frequencies that needs to be attenuated are high itched and then fabric is well suited. In an not illustrated embodiment the damping part is made from a rigid sound attenuating material with portions that extends above the upper batter head and alternatively the damping part may extend all the way around the circumference of the drum
Although the invention has been described in conjunction with a number of preferred embodiments, it is to be understood that various modifications may still be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. One such modification is to provide the damping part with a slit or an opening intended for receiving a microphone, while still attenuating sound emitted through the damping part.
Claims
Claims
1 A device for attenuation, in at least one direction, of chosen sound frequencies emitted by a percussion instrument, characterised in that said device comprised a damping element that is intended to be arranged such that it extends along part of the periphery of a percussion instrument and along this part extends below the bottom head, but leaves part of the circumference not covered.
2 A device according to claim 1, characterised in that said damping element is provided with an attachment device embodied for attachment of the damping element to the percussion instrument.
