VIOLA D. MUZZY, OF EASTBRANOH, PENNSYLVANIA.
FLY-ESCAPE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 673,919, dated Ma 14, 1901.
Application filed March 8, 1898. Renewed December 7, 1900. Serial No. 89,060. (No model.)
To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIOLA D. MUZZY, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at Eastbranch, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Escapes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is designed as an improvement upon the fly-escape shown and described.
in Patent No. 598,531, granted to me February 20, 1897; and it consists in the employment, in connection with a screen having an escape-aperture therein and a conical pocket having an opening at its apex and an annular rim at its base, of a cap located upon the opposite side of the screen, comprising a plate having a segmental upper end to which said rim is adapted to be secured, an inwardly-extending offset at its opposite end whose lower end is open, and bendable guides attached to the sides of said offset and adapted to be secured to the screen.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a window-screen provided with the improved device. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through a portion of the screen, showing the fly-escape and cap therefor on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the improved cap and the guides extending therefrom.
The window-screen 1 has an escape-aperture 2 therein, and upon the outer surface of the screen, covering the aperture, is a conical pocket 3, having an egress-opening 4 at the apex thereof, the latter being extended upwardly. The said conical pocket is attached to a metallic rim 5, the latter being secured to the screen by suitable fastening devices.
This construction is shown in the patent referred to and no claim thereon is made herein.
The improvement consists of a cap 6, comprising a plate 7, which is secured to the inner surface of the screen directly opposite the point of attachment of the metallic rim 5 and adapted to receive the fastening devices for the said rim, and thereby hold the two parts together on opposite sides of the screen. The lower part of the plate 7 is bent inwardly ing fromthe lower ends of the sides of the box-like offset are guides 9, which are bendable and extend downwardly over the inner surface of the screen, preferably in divergent lines, to form ways or leaders to the aperture in the screen. The said guides can be extended laterally and lengthened to varying degrees, and after they have been properly adjusted they are secured to the screen by suitable clasps or fastening devices 10, which may be readily disconnected and reapplied at any time for changing the position of thesaid guides. Thesaidfasteningdevices, asshown, consist of short strands of wire passed through openings in the guides 9 and thence through openings in the screen 1, with their ends bent outwardly. By the use of the said guides the flies are directed to the aperture 2 in the screen 1 at some distance below the said aperture, and the operation of the escape is thus rendered more efiective and positive.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. The combination with a screen having an escape-aperture therein, of a cap covering said aperture on one side of the screen and comprising a box-like covering with depending bendable guidesintegral therewith.
2. The combination with a screen having an escape-aperture therein, a conical pocket upon the outer surface of said screen with an opening at its apex, and an annular supporting-rim at the base of said pocket, of a cap upon the opposite side of the screen comprising a plate having a segmental upper end to which said rim is attached, and an inwardlyextending box-like offset at its opposite end whose lower end is open, and bendable guides attached to the sides of said offset.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIOLA D. MUZZY.
