ARMIN JOSEPH DIECKMANN, 0F SAQI'NAW, MICHIGAN.
SN AP-BUTTON;
Application filed March 3,1915; Serial No. 11,743.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARMIN JOSEPH DIECK- MANN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Saginaw. 1n the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to buttons adapted for use in connection with eyelets, of the class used upon vehicle curtains, etc., and the main object thereof is to provide such buttons which consist of two members jointly forming a head, means for normally main taining said members separated in a resilient manner, and means for connecting the same to a curtain or the like, said head being adapted to be forced through an eyelet in another curtain element; I do not show such eyelets in this application, they forming the subject matter for another application filed herewith.
' My invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which like reference characters refer to like parts in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of one type of button constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 1 is a plan view of a modification thereof; Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a section taken on the line 6--6 of Fig. 5; F ig. 7 is a bottom plan view thereof; Fig. 8 is a plan view of still another modification; Fig. 9 is a section taken on the line 99 of Fig. 8; and Fig. 10 is a bottom plan view thereof.
In Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, I have shown a button composed of two similar hemispherical members 11 held, each, on a reduced neck 12 which, in turn, is angularly struck up from a base portion 18, the members 11 being normally maintained in separated relationship at their outer ends. The means for so maintaining these members consists of a disk 14 having a central opening therethrough to admit the base portions 13, diav metrically arranged, downwardly and inwardly bent, flanges 15, and a plurality of spaced prongs 16. This button is preferably composed entirely of stampings of spring metal but of such temper as to allow the prongs 16 to be bent into locking en- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
gagement with a curtain element without breaking.
In Figs. 4 to 7, inclusive, I have shown a button composed of two similar members 17 'jointly forming a shouldered head, held,
each, on a neck portion 18 provided with in- 'wardly turned wings. 19, the-wings of one member overlapping those of the other member, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, thereby serving as guides for each other; the neck portions 18 are each connected with a base portion 20 held in the disk 21 in the same man-' ner as already described by means of flanges 22, said disk having prongs 23 thereon; also held by said flanges is a plate spring 24 which serves to maintain the head members in separated relationship but permitting their being forced together manually.
In Figs. 8 to 10, inclusive, I have shown a button composed of similar head members 25 mounted, each, upon a segmental, tubular, neck portion26, the lower ends ofwhich neck portions are narrowed at their adjacent sides to form base portions 27 arranged at such an angle to the neck portions as to insure a separated relationship of the head members; these base portions are passed through a central opening in a disk 28 having a downwardly directed, inwardly bent, flange 29 at opposite sides thereof to hold a circular plate 30, of spring metal, which I,
serves, in turn, to hold the head members in position, and the disk 28 is also provided with prongs 31.
One of the features common'to all the forms is the separated relationship of .the
respective head members; another is the ability to force said head members together against yielding, resilient, means in order to reduce the diameter of .the respective head and permit its introduction into and through an eyelet in the usual manner; another common feature is the shoulders on the respective head members, although in the form first described the shoulders are curved instead of abrupt as in the two last forms described; another common feature is the disk having flanges for locking the parts together, the central opening to permit assembly, and the prongs forconnecting the same to a curtain element; and still another feature common to all is the formation of the parts of stampings from suitable material.
nor to sizes, nor to materials, my invention residing, broadly, in the features common to all the forms above enumerated, and to any others not specifically mentioned. I
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the class described, com prising a disk provided with a central opening, with prongs, and with inwardly turned flanges, two similar head members held in saidopening and provided, each, with an outwardly directed base member, and a spring plate held by said flanges for maintaining said head members in separated relationship.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a disk provided with a central opening, with prongs, and with inwardly turned flanges, two similar head members held in said opening and provided, each, with wings, one set of wings overlapping the other, said head members being also provided with ou wardly directed base members bearing against the under side of said disk, and means held by said flanges for resiliently maintaining said head members in separated relationship.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
