PATENT OFFICE.
HAT-FASTENING IVIEANS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 774,598, dated November 8, 1904.
Application filed August 12, 1904. Serial No. 220,527. No model.)
To rtZ whom, it nut concern.-
Be it known that I, CEoELIA MART A Mo- CONNELL, residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fastening Means, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat fastening and securing devices which are more especially adapted for use in ladies and childrens hats, and more particularly seeks to provide a device of the character stated of a very simple, economical, and durable construction, which will prevent the hat from becoming blown up in front during windy weather.
With certain objects in view, which will be hereinafter apparent, the invention includes certain novel construction and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first described in detail and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an inverted plan View of a childs hat with my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a detail horizontal section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the comb and guard members detached.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 designates a comb, which has its body portion 1 provided with a plurality of apertures 1 through which are passed U-shaped pin members 2. The U-shaped pin members 2 are passed through a guard 3, of leather or other suitable material, and provided with eyelets 2, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
The comb 1 is adapted to be fastened to the inside of the hat H, as shown in Fig. 1, with the prongs passing through the eyelets of the guard 2, through the hat-crown h, and a second guard member, 3, having eyelets 3, and then bent over, as shown in Fig. 2, to securely attach the comb to the inside of the hat-crown. The comb is so attached to the hat-crown that the prongs 1 thereof lie in approximately a horizontal plane and are adapted to be inserted the same from blowing ofif.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the operation, construction, and many advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and I desire it understood that slight changes in the detail construction and arrangement of my invention can be made without departing from the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I am aware that heretofore devices have been provided for securing the hat upon the head of the wearer, and I do notbroadly claim such idea; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character stated comprising in combination with a hat a comb having an apertur'ed body portion, a plurality-of U- shaped prong members held in saidapertures, a guard member adapted to engage the hatcrown and having eyelets through which said prong members are adapted to pass, all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. A device of the character stated comprising in combination with a hat, a comb, a plurality of U-shaped pin members secure to said comb, a guard member having eyelets, and adapted to engage the inside of the hat-crown, a second guard member having eyelets adapted to engage the outside of the hat-crown, said pin members adapted to pass through said guard-member eyelets and through-the hatcrown to be bent over at right angles to secure said comb to said hat, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the character stated comprising in combination with a hat a comb including a body portion, said body portion being provided with a plurality of apertures, U- shaped pin members loosely held in said bodyportion apertures, substantially as shown and 'described.
