REGINA MERGLER, OF PUEBLO, COLORADO.
HAT-PIN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 740,368, dated September 29, 1903. Application filed December 27, 1902. Serial No. 136,789. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, REGINA MERGLEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved hat-pin; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide av `novel and simple device of this character which is adapted for use in securely fastening on a ladys hat without the necessity of passing the pin through the hat, and hence avoiding injury to the hat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of a hat-pin embodying my improvements, showing the same applied to a hat, the latter being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the hat-pin. Fig. 3 is asimilar view, and Fig. 4 is asimilai-l view of the hook.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a pin 1, which is substantially Ugshaped or of hairpin form and is providedwith a pair of parallel pin portions la, connected together l at one end, as at 2. I also employ an eyeletplate 8 and a hook-plate 4. The eyelet-plate is provided with a pair of openings 5 of suitable size and suitably spaced apart to enable the pin to be passed therethrough, and the upper portion of the eyelet-plate is provided with a plurality of openings 6 to enable the same to be stitched to the inner side of the hat, preferably on the right-hand side thereof and so that the openings 5 will be just below or approximate to the brim. The hook-plate 4 is provided with similar openings 7, whereby it may be stitched in the hat at the side opposite the eyelet-plate, and the said hookplate is provided on its lower side, which deperids somewhat below the brim, with a pair of reversely directed or curved hooks S, adapted to be engaged by the portions of the pin. The latter is curved longitudinally to correspond with the contourof the head. In practice the end portion' 2 of the pin may be provided with a suitable jewel or other ornament. The pin and the eyelet and hook plate may be made either of metal or of any other suitable material.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, it is thought, without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to protect by LettersPatent, is-
The combination of a U-shaped hatpin, an eyelet-plate having openings for the arms of said pin, and means whereby itv may be secured to a hat, and a hook-plate having means whereby it may be attached to ahat and further provided with reversely-directed hooks to engage and secure the arms of said pin, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
REGINA MERGLER.

PETER MEEGLEE.
