Be it known that I, JOHN B. MGCULLOCH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and Stato of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication.

The main object of my invention is to provide improved means to be used instead of a hat-pin for securing a hat upon the head of the wearer.

The minor objects of different parts and features of construction with which I put my invention into practice will be understood from i the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Flgure 1 is avertical section of a hat and fastener constructed according to my invention. Fig.2 isaverticalsection,partlybroken away, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation of one of the comb-shaped devices forming part of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, showing the hat in dotted lines partly broken away.

The device shown consists mainly of a band or supporting member l, secured within the crown 6 of the hat, and the comb-shaped members 7, adjustably secured to said band 1. Similar comb-shaped members 8 may be likewise secured to the band 1, it' desired. The members 7 and 8 are secured to the band 1 and to the hat by means of the threaded pins 9 and nuts 10. The washers 11 bear against the members 7 and 8 and washers 12 bear against the outside of the crown 6. The band 1 is provided with a series of apertures 18 for the pins 9. The members 7 and 8 may thus be adjusted to any desired position longitudinally of the band 1. In the construction shown the hat will be perforated at the apertures 13 in the proper positions at which the members 7 and 8 are to be secured. The band lis secured to the hat by the stitches 14.

The band 1 is made of metal or other suitably-stiff material. The members 7 and 8 may be made of any suitably-stiff and resilient material, such as is ordinarily used in the manufacture of combs. The teeth 15 are preferably made to bow inwardly except at their free ends 16, where same have a backward turn, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The backward turn of said teeth at 16 is designed to prevent injury to the scalp of the wearer. The shank 17 is provided with apertures 1S for receiving one of the pins 9. The shank 17 will be preferably secured to the band 1 by a single pin through one of said apertures 18. VThis provides for a pivotal movement of the members 7 and 8, permitting same to be turned upwardly into the crown 4of the hat. In Fig. 1, 19 represents an outer hat-band.

The operation of my device is as follows: The members 7 and 8 will be rst secured in the desired position, which will depend some what upon the shape of the hat and upon the shape of the head of the wearer and the manner of dressing the hair. In most cases a pair of members 7 or 8 will be sufficient to firmly hold the hat upon the head of the wearer. In such case the other pair of members 7 or 8 may be omitted from the device or may be turned into the crown of the hat on their pivotal connection. If it were desired to use the member 7 only, it would be secured in aposition slightly forward of that shown in Fig. 5. To place the hat upon the head, the wearer will press the thumbs against the inside of the teeth 15, so as to have said teeth pass along the scalp and under the hair. It will be seen that said teeth will then press inwardly against the head of the wearer, and thus securely retain the hat in the desired position. In case the wearer wishes to use also the members 8 it will be seen that the latter will act against the head in a similar manner in a position forward of the members 7. When the device is not in use, the members 7 and 8 will be turned upwardly into the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be understood that in most cases the members 7 and 8 will accomplish their purpose when made considerably shorter than shown.

It is plain that the manner of connecting the band 1 with the members 7 and S, the manner of attachment to the hat-crown, and other details of construction may be altered Without departing from theI spirit of my in- Vention. I therefore do not conine myself to such details except as hereinafter limited in the claim.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a hat, of a rigid supporting-band secured Within and along the lower edge of the hat-crown, a pair of resilient comb-shaped fastening members independently pivoted to said supporting-band upon sides opposite of the crown, said fastening members being adjustable longitudinally of said supporting-band, and being movable on their pivotal connections from a position Within the crown to a depending position, having their teeth vertically disposed and their free ends bearing toward each other when in said depending position. l
