UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLOTHES-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907.
Application filed May 16, 1906. Serial No. 317.117.
To aZl whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, MARY LOUDON SoHooN- MAKER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Rondout, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Hangers, of which the following is a specific ation, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for hanging clothes in closets, cupboards, halls, and the like; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is sim ple in construction and operation and by means of which various kinds and classes of clothing may be conveniently suspended or supported by means of a single device'which may be attached to or connected with a pole, bar, or other support.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accomp anying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a front view of my improved clothes-hanger and showing one method of its use, and Fig. 2 a view at right angles to that of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a rod a, the upper end of which is provided with a hook, ring, or eye I) and the lower end with a hook c, and said rod a is provided with a plurality of radially-projecting arms (1, which in the form of construction shown are all in the same vertical plane and which project outwardly from the rod a, and each of said arms (I is provided at its outer end with a hook member (1 and said arms increase in length from the bottom upwardly. The rod a is also provided in the form of construction shown with two laterally-directed arms e, which are secured thereto or connected there with near the top thereof and which range outwardly and upwardly and are preferably provided with knob or head members a and which are intended as a support for hats, while the arms (Z and hook c at the lower end of the rod a are intended as a support for various articles of clothing, and by reason of the fact that the arms d all increase in length from the bottom of the rod a upwardly various articles may be conveniently hung on clothes-hanger may the hook c and the separate arms (1 without said articles interfering with each other.
The arms e may be in a plane with the rod a, as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, or they may be extended outwardly and upwardly, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. Secured to the rod a, near the bottom thereof, in the form of construction shown is a transverse member f, which in the form of construction shown is composed of wire having backwardly-directed end loops which are adapted to bear on a wall 9, which is also provided with a transverse strip h, from which the hanger is suspended by means of a screw, hook, or other device i, the object of the part f being to hold the hanger in a vertical plane parallel with the wall, and any suitable transverse device which will accomplish the same object may be employed for this purpose, and in some cases my improved be employed without the part f, said hanger being suspended by means of a hook, nail, or other device secured directly to a wall or other support, and, if desired, any suitable means may be provided to prevent the bottom of a hanger from swinging laterally.
My improved clotheshanger may be made of any desired material, metal being preferred, and any desired number of the arms cl and 6 may be employed.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clothes-hanger, comprising a main rod having a hook, ring or eye at its upper end and a forwardly-directed hook at its lower end, forwardly-directed arms connected with said main rod between the top and bottom thereof and provided at their free ends with hooks, said arms increasing in length upwardly from the bottom of the main rod to the top thereof, and said main rod being also provided at the upper end thereof with outwardly and upwardly directed arms.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed myname, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of May, 1906.
MARY LOUDON SCHOONMAKER.
Witnesses Mrs. GEORGE COYKENDALL, G O. CoY KENDALL.
