SUSPENSION-HOOK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,236, dated. June 12, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. FLETCHER, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Suspension-Hook; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof.

My invention .relates to a new and useful suspension-hook for sustaining-curtains, drapery, &c.; and it consists in a double plate, having a swiveled hook in its top, and in a screw-eye passing through said plate and receiving a nut, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The particular adaptation of my hookwhich at present I have in view is to suspend from it at the same time the heavier curtains or draperyand also the lace curtains to the best advantage.

The usual way in which curtains are suspended is by a cornice, or by a horizontal pole upon which are fitted a number of rings. These rings have eyes or staples in them, and some kinds of hooks or pins are secured to the curtains and engage with the screw-eyes to suspend them. All these hooks have in some way to be sewed to or pinned into the material, and they cannot be made ornamental, nor can they be applied with much readiness. The lace curtains are secured toa rod behind the pole, and are drawn up so tight that they are seen from the inside above the droop of the heavier curtains.

It is the object of my invention to provide a hook adapted to be readily applied, capable of ornamentation, and which will suspend from itself both the heavier curtains and the lace curtains. n Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my device. Fig. 2 shows its application. Fig. 3 is a view of the back of the bent plate A. Fig. 4 shows the screweye.

A single piece of sheet metal is bent to form a double plate, A, which may be made of any desired size and of any ornamental shape or design.

B is a hook, the shank of which passes down through the top of plate A and is headed loosely therein, whereby it may turn or swivel.

C is a screw-eye, which passes through the double plate A from behind, and D is a nut upon the end of the screw in front. This nut imay be made as ornamental as may be called In applying this device, as shown in Fig. 2, the curtain E is first punched and then is fitted up between the sides of the double plate. The screw-eye C passes through both plate and curtain, thus securing the latter in the plate. The sides or leaves of the plate lie flat on the curtain and present a very neat appearance, especially with the ornamental nut on the front. The lace curtain F has secured to it any form of hook, f, which is fitted to the loop or eye of the screw C behind, and is thus suspended. In this manner I dispense with the rod usually used for the lace curtains, and hang the curtains in such a manner that they will not appear above the droop of the heavier ones.

G is the pole, and g the rings, having eyes or staples g, with which the swiveled hooks B engage. By being thus swiveled the curtains may turn or be moved readily without interference from the hook.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A suspension-hook for curtains, drapery, &c., consisting of the bent or double plate A, a means for securing the material between its sides, and the swiveled or movable hook B, mounted in its top, substantially as herein described.

2. A suspension-hook for curtains, drapery, 8pc, consisting of the bent or double plate A, the screw-eye C, passing through the sides of said plate to secure the material, the nut D, for securing the screw-eye, and the swiveledor movable hook B, mounted in the top of the plate A, substantially as herein described.
