B. W. HYDBR. PROTECTOR FOR TBLEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE POLBs.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 27,-1906.

PROTECTOR FOR TEkEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE POLEvS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29,- 1906.
Application iiled February 27. 1906. Serial N0- 303,300.
T0 all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMAN WL HYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutherfordton, in the county of Rutherford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Telegraph and Telephone Poles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to protectors designed especially for use in connection with telegraph and telephone poles, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which in practice will eifectually protect and revent decay of that portion of the pole whic is embedded in the ground ,-one whereby rain will be directed outwardly from the pole, and one wherein the entrance of moisture will be eX- eluded from the interior of the protector.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts `more fully hereinafter described;
In the accompanying drawings, Fi ure 1 is an elevation of the lower portion o' a telegraph-pole equipped with a protector embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the protector in vertical l'ongi. tudinal section.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the protector in the form of a tubular metal casing adapted to be applied to and include the lower end of the pole 2, said casing, which is formed to it u on the pole, having its normally lower en closed, as at 3, and being of a length for its upper end to project somewhat above the ground-surface when the pole is erected for use.
Applied to the pole 2 at a point adjacent the upper end of the protector 1 is a metal shield 4, preferably of corneal form, as shown,-
and disposed to cover the upper end of the casing 1, said shield having a cylindrical tubular portion 5 adapted to fit upon a pole for holding the shield in position thereon, there being fitted onto said tubular portion 5 of the shield a guard 6, composed of rubber or other waterproof material, in turn attached to the whole by means of nails or other appropriate fastening members 7.
In practice the protector 1 is applied to the base of the pole with the shield in position to house the upper end of the protector, which wholly incloses that portion of the pole which is buried in the ground and serves to protect the same against moisture, and consequently to obviate decay. The shield 4 acts to deflect rain and direct the same outward from the pole, While the impervious guard 6 pre-- vents rain or other moisture passing down the pole between the tubular'portion of the and to the interior of the casing.
Having thus described my invention, wh at l claim is- A device of the class described comprising a tubular metal casing designed to inclose the lower end of a pole, a shield fitted on the latter to house the upper end of the casing, said shield having a tubular portion, and a flexible, impervious guard fitted on the tubular vportion of the shield and arranged to tightly embrace the pole at a point above the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
