owefrfs' WILLIAM F. A. BOWERS, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINGIS.
PROTECTOR FOB. PADLOCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
rat-eared Mar. at, mit.
Application filed .Tune 19, 1916. Serial No. 104,481.
To all lwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. A. BOWERS, a citizen of the `United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in protectors for padlccks, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be adaptedpto elfectually protect a padlock against rain, snow and other elements which ordinarily cause rusting of a lock which is exposed to the weather.
A further object is the production of a device as mentioned, which will be of simple construction, one which may be readily and easily applied, and which will be highly eliicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
`With these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawingsy forming a part 0f this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a partially sectional front elevation of a protector embodying one form of the invention, showing the same applied for use,
Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of Fig. l, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2, illustrating another form of the invention.
As illustrated in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings, the protector is shown arranged for use in connection with a padlock 1 which coperates with a staple 2 projecting from the door frame 3, said padlock being adapted to lock a hasp A of a door 5 in engage` ment with staple 2.
The protector consists of a substantiallyagainst the weather. Said protector is normally held in lowered or operative position by means of a helical torsional spring 9 which is arranged at the hinge. The inner edges of the sides of the protector are notched at l0, in order to aord clearance .for the hasp A, thereby allowing the inner edges of the sides of the protector to engage snugly against the adjacent side of the door frame, to effectually exclude the weather.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, the protector is Ydisconnected from the door frame, the same being formed of two cuplike elongated sections 11 which are hingedly connected together at 12, said members 11 being adapted to snugly embrace the padlock, as shown in said views. A helical torsional spring 13 coperates with the members 1l to normally hold the same in embracing relation with the lock. At one end, the members 11 are slotted as at 14, in order to afford clearance for the staple 2.
In either form of the invention, the protector may be readily and easily moved from embracing relation with the lock, so as to permit of the insertion of a key into the lock for operating the same, or for removing or otherwise manipulating the lock.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of constructions set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with a padlock, of a protector adapted to inclose said lock and provided with a notch in its edge to receive a portion of said lock; and resilient means for normally holding said protector in operative position, substantially as described.
2. A padlock in combination with a protector comprising a pair of hingedly connected members provided at their adjacent edges with means for receiving a portion of the lock and means for normally maintaining said protector in closed position, substantially as described.
3. A padlock in combination with a proaoj ' teotor comprising, pairof similar concave v name to this speciicution in the presence of vmembers hlngedly connected and provided two subscribing Witnesses.
at their adjacent edges with an oae'ning' to l v receive t portion of the lock india spring VILLIAM F' A BOWERS' normally holding said protector in closed Witnesses: position, lsubstantially as described. JOSH-UA R. H. PoT'rs,
In testimony whereofV I have signed my ARTHUR A. OLsEN.
