UNITED srarns PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN HINRICHSEN, 0F KIEL, GERMANY.
GUARD FOR DENTAL HANDPIECES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN IIINR'ron- SEN, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Kiel, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Dental Handpieces and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved guard for dental handpieces and the like, which serves as a protector for the patient and operator against infection.
The accompanying drawing shows in Figures 1 to 3 in a longitudinal section, seetional side view and plan respectively a guard as applied to a straight handpiece, and in Figs. 4 to 6 in similar views to the. former a guard as applied to a curved ha ndpiece, of a dental drill.
The guard comprises two shell halves a and b of sheet metal which at one side are hinged by means of easily detachable pins (7 while at the other side one half is adapted to catch over the other and can be fastened thereon by means of a hinged flap (Z which is easily detachable and adapted to engage a hook e on the other half, the drawing showing this closure (Z, 6 in Figs. 1, 2 and 4t in open position. A widened part for the safety-button f and narrowed parts 9 on the guard serve to prevent the latter from turnin and shifting on the straighthandpiece this being impossible per 86 with the curved Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 15, 1910.
Application filed June 29, 1908.

handpiece. The guard possesses, for the passage of the drill or the like, an opening 71, which, for operations by which moisture might penetrate through the same, can be tightened by a rubber washer i.
The advantage of the improved guard is that, when using the same, the handpieee can not come in touch with the patient and need not therefore be disinfected after each operation, while this is absolutely necessary for the guard for which purpose for each handpiece several freshly disinfected guards must be at the disposal of the operator.
Having fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A guard for dental handpieces and the like, comprising in combination with the handpiece, a foldable shell of sheet metal adapted to the shape of said handpiece and hinged at one side and designed to cover said handpiece, means to close said shell at the other side, and means to secure said shell in position on said handpiece, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
