LUMBER-BINDING CHAIN.
Application filed May 22, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1913.
Serial No. 699,054.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED J. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dudley, in the county of Lincoln, State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lumber-Binding Chains; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lumber binding chains and has for an object to provide a novel tightening lever for drawing the chain taut about the logs, a further object being to provide a novel latch for locking the lever in operative position.
lVith the above object in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the device applied. Fig. a is across sectional view taken on the line H Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary detail view of the hooked end of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates the binding chain, and 11 designates the locking lever means of which the chain is drawn taut about the of the chain are drawn together as shown in Fig. 3, and to lock the lever in this operative position the following mechanism is employed.
A. latch 14 is provided at one end with an orifice 15 to receive one of the links of the chain, the latch being provided near its free end with an opening 16 to receive a reduced finger 17 formed on the end of the lever handle, the finger being provided with an opening 18 which is disposed below the latch when the latter is applied, and which is adapted to receive a divided spring pintle 19 carried upon a chain 20 which is secured to the extreme free end of the latch.
When the latch is in operative position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 the lever is locked in position to hold the chain taut upon the logs. To loosen the chain it is simply necessary to remove the pintle 19 and disengage the latch from the lever handle as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 whereupon the lever may be swung in the direction of the free end of the chain to slacken the chain and disengage the hook thereof from the free end of the chain.
What is claimed is The combination with a binding chain, of a tightening lever provided in one end with an arcuate slot securing one end of said chain, and provided on the same end with a hook adapted to receive and engage in a link of the chain near the free end of said chain, a latch secured to said chain near the fixed end thereof, and having an orifice adapted to receive the handle end of said lever, and a pintle carried by said latch engageable through an orifice formed in said handle end and operating to detachably secure said latch to said lever.
In testimony whereof, I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
FRED J. MILLER. lVitnesses:
A. L. MILLER, W. A. MILLER.
