UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT IN CLEVISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,073, dated January 8, 1878; application filed October 21, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM KINNEY, of Bellevue, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Olevises, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a side view of a clevis to which my improvement has been applied, partly in section to show the construction. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same 5 and Fig. 4, a longitudinal section of the same, taken through line 40 as, Fig. 1, and showing the lower side of the upper arm.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved clevis for use upon double-trees, and in various other places where a clevis is required, which shall be so constructed that the pin cannot come out accidentally, and which shall be simple in construction, and strong, durable, and convenient in use.
The invention consists in an improved clevis, in which the bow has grooves formed in the inner side of its pinholes, and a shoulder formed upon the outer side of its lower end, and in which the pin has a lug upon the side of its lower end, and a latch pivoted to and a shoulder formed upon its head, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the clevis-bow, and B represents the clevis-pin.
Upon the inner sides of the pin-holes in the ends of the bow A are formed grooves a, to allow the lug b formed upon one side of the lower end of the pin B, to pass through.
A portion of the outer side of the lower arm of the bow A is cut away from the groove a, half-way around, forming a shoulder, (0?, for the lug b to strike against when the pin B has been turned half-way around to prevent it from turning any farther.
To the side of the head of the pin B is pivoted a latch, N, to be turned down at the side of the upper end of the bow A, to prevent the said pin B from turning back when its lug b is against the shoulder a Upon the side of the head of the pin B is formed a shoulder, b for the edge of the latch 12 to strike against, to prevent it from going any farther than to an upright position when turned down.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved clevis, in which the bow A has grooves a formed in the inner side of its pin-holes, and a shoulder, a formed upon the outer side of its lower end, and in which the pin B has a lug, 1), upon the side of its lower end, and a latch, 11 pivoted to and a shoulder, b formed upon its head, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM KINNEY.
