ALBERT H. JAREOKI, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-TONGS.
Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. [90,330, dated May 1, 1877; application filed April 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT H. JAREOKI, of Erie, in the county of Erie, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being-had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pipe-. wrench or pipe-tongs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side view, part in section, of my improved pipetongs. Fig. 2 is a side view of the bit.
A and A represent the two handles of my pipe-ton gs, pivoted together at a. The handle A is extended beyond the pivot, substantially in the manner shown in Fig. l, and forms the hook B.
The other handle, A, extends also beyond the pivot a, and is bent nearly at right angles, and is provided with a head, 0. The two handles are formed -with shoulders I), immediately beyond the pivot, to form stops for the handles, both in opening and closing.
i D represents the bit, made in the form of a round bolt, with exterior screw-threads b, and has one end beveled on both sides to form a central sharp edge, 01, and on the other end of the bit is formed a thumb-piece, D, by means of which the bit may be turned.
. In the head 0 is made a hole with female screw-threads, through which the bit D is screwed and adjusted to any size pipe desired.
\Vhen adjusted in position the bit is held by means of a pin, h, passing through a hole in the head, and entering a longitudinal groove, 11, in the bit D, which prevents the bit from being twisted when griping the pipe, and as the bit then cannot turn, it is also prevented from moving lengthwise.
The pin it is riveted or otherwise permanently secured to a flat spring, G, which is fastened to the outside of the head 0 in such a position that v the pin it will enter the hole made for it in the head.
When the bit D is to be turned, the spring G is raised by its outer end sufficiently far for the pin it to clear the groove 6 in the bit.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The spring G, with pin h, in combination with the head 0 and the bolt D, having longitudinal groove i, and thumb-piece D on the lower end of same, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto'set my hand this 4th day of April, 1877.
ALBERT H. JARECKI. Witnesses:
