Description

do Model.) f I E. SOETBEER.
Dividers. No. 240,551 I Pate ntecl April 26,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD SOETBEER, OF NEW BBEMEN, OHIO.
DIVIDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 240,557, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed January 31, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD SOETBEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bremen, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dividers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyin g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in that class of devices known as dividers, such as used by mechanicsin measuring widths and forming circles; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the same, whereby said dividers are opened or closed and held in any desired position, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which-- Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved dividers. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view in detail; and Fig. 3 represents an end view, in detail, of the same.
The letter A designates a dividers, having the usual joint, a, and pron gs a a. Said prongs are provided with slots 11 b, in which are pivoted blocks B B, through which pass horizontally a screw, 0, that is provided with a thumbpiece, a, washer c, and a groove, cZencircling the same, in which rests a pin, 0 that passes through the prong a and theblock B, thereby m allowing said screw to turn .in said block, and
at the same time preventing the one from becoming detached from the other. The block B, opposite the block B, is pivoted within the slot b in the prong co in a similar manner to that above described, except that the pin c does not pass entirely through said block, but stops on either side of the screw 0, as clearly shown in -Fig. 3 of the drawings.
It will thus be observed from the above description that the blocks being pivoted as described allows the prongs aforesaid to be opened or closed by means of the screw 0, the blocks B B always remaining in a vertical position. Again, it will be seen that the block B is provided with a female screw-thread, in which works the male screw 0, for closing or opening the dividers A, while the block B is constructed without any screw-threads, the screw O being kept in place by the pin 0 and the groove 0 as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi In a pair of dividers of the class described, the combination of the block B, provided with a transverse hole to receive a pin, and the adjusting-screw 0, formed with the groove 0 engaging with the pivotal pm of the block B, substantially as described, and for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony whereof I. affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
E. SOETBEER.
Witnesses W. FALLING, H. HEIMFELD.
