UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT H. JAREGKI, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IM PROVEMENT IN PlPE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,795, dated August 6, 1878; application filed April 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. J ARECKI, of Erie, in the county of Erie and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a pair of pipe-tongs, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out by the claims.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, Iwill now proceed to describe its. construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pipetongs with the head in section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the bit.
A and A represent the two handles of my pipe-ton gs, pivoted together at a. The handle A is extended beyond the pivot, substantially as shown in Fig. 1, and forms the hook B. The other handle, A, extends also beyond the pivot a, and is bent nearly at right angles, and is formed with the head 0. The two handles A A immediately beyond the pivot are formed with shoulders I) b, to form stops for the handles both in opening and closing.
The head 0 is forked or formed with a central longitudinal slot, in which is placed the nut D for operating the bit G, which is passed through the head and the nut.
The bit G is made in the form of a round bolt, with exterior screw threads (I, which screw through the nut D. One end of the bit G is beveled on both sides, forming a sharp central edge, a, and the other end is cut with a series of teeth, h, across the end, as shown in Fig. 1. On one side of the bit G is a loin gitudinal groove, a, into which enters a pin, m, fastened in the head 0, thereby keeping the bit from turning and preventing its twisting when griping the pipe.
By turning the nut D in the head 0 the bit Gr is moved out or in, as required, and when in position to grasp the pipe it cannot move longitudinally without the nut being turned by hand.
The bit G is reversible, so that either the sharp edge 6 or the blunt end with the teeth h may be used, as required.
I disclaim, under this specification, the main principles of the invention as shown and dc scribed in Letters Patent granted to me April 22, 1873, and reissued May 1,1877, No. 7,650, inasmuch as my present invention simply consists in the construction of the devices shown and described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The round adjustable and reversible bit Gr, provided with exterior screw-threads, in combination with the slotted head G and a dc vice for preventing the bit from turning, the operating-nut being placed in the slot inthe head and surrounding the bi t, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the pin m, stationary in the head 0, the detachable and reversible bit G, with longitudinal groove n, and the nut D in the slotted head 0, and surrounding the bit, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of April, 1877.
ALBERT H. JARECKI. Witnesses:
FRANK GALT, J. O. Scnnonnnn.
