Description
i amTEn STATES PATENT 'EEIo ALBERT H. JAREGKI, OF EEIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PlPE-TONGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 179,317, dated June 27, 1876 application filed April 1, 1876.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT HENRY JA- REOKI, or city of Erie, in the county of Erie, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and do hereby declare that the following is a -full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of pipe-tongs,
' as will be hereinafter more fully set forth;
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved pipe-ton gs. Figs. 2 and 3 are detailed views of parts thereof.
A and B represent the two handles, pivoted together at a, and both extended forward from said pivot-point a suitable distance. The forward end of the handle Aforms the curved or hook-shaped jaw C, while theforward end ofthe handleB forms the straightjaw D, which is slotted from side to side, from the front or outer end inward for a suitable distance, as shown. In
this slot is inserteda bit, G, which is held by a set-screw, b, through the top ofthe jaw. The bit G is made of a flat piece of steel, of square or rectangular form, with a circular recess, 00, on top and bottom, and the set-screw b enters the top recess to hold the bit in place. The
.bit can be changed and reversed,,so as to present either of the eight edges to the work, and when entirely worn out it can easily be removed and another substituted.
I am aware of the existence of pipetongs in which a reversible cubical die, having apertures at right angles to each other, is used in a recessed handle, and connected thereto by a cross-pin. Hence I disclaim such as being my invention.
To extract the die in such case, as known to me, the connecting-pin must be taken from the perforated die and recessed head.
In my invention the die is not perforated, and to rotate the same the connecting-screw need not be removed from thejaw.
By having the die solid it can be more cheaply made, and is more durable and'notliable to break, as would be the case when the die is perforated, which wouldrequire drilling and in the latter case, in use, such perforated die would be liable to become easily broken.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The solid steel bit G, provided with a central circular recess, 00,011 each side, in combination with the slotted jaw D and set-screw b, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand .this 21st day of March, 1876.
ALBERT HENRY JAR'EOKI.
