Description

(No Model.)
PQARMANTROUT. PIPE 0R NUT WRENCH.
No somss.
Patented July 25,'-1 8 93 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER ARMAN'IROU'I, OFIIOOVER, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK L. SCHNEIDER, OF SAME PLACE.
PIPE OR NUT WRENCH. 7
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,985, dated July 25, 1893.
Application filed September 2, 1892. Serial No. 444,913- (No model. I
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, PETER ARMANTROUT, a citizenof theUnited States, residing at Hoover, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in Pipe or Nut Wrenches, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to that class of wrenches having a stationary jaw and a movable jaw pivotally mounted in a slot formed in the head of the wrench and capable of longitudinal and vertical adjustment, and has for its objects to provide a cheap, simple and efficient pipe or nut wrench.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts and their novel combination or arrangement all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Referring to the drawings:l represents the handle, 2 the head, and 3 the lower or stationary jaw. This lower jaw is slightly curved, as shown, and provided with a shoulder 4 to abut against the pipe or nut and assists in maintaining the wrench in position.
5 is the upper or movable jaw extending through. the slot 6, said jaw having its outer end of greater width than the pivoted portion formed in the head 2, and pivoted on the pin or bolt 7. This movable jaw is provided with a curved end 8 adapted to fit the pipe or nut. The curved end has a knife edge 9 which will slightly embed itself in the pipe or nut when the wrench is operatedand co-operate with the shoulder 4 on the stationary jaw to aidthe wrench in securing a firm grip. The head and movable jaw are each provided with a series of holes 10 to enable the movable jaw to be adjusted longitudinally or vertically relative to the head and permit the wrench to be used with pipes or nuts of difierent diameters.
It will be seen from the abovedescription that a veryeffective wrench is obtained which may be readily adjusted.
Having thus described the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention, the following is what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A pipe or nut wrench comprising a movable jaw, a handle provided with a slotted head having a curved rigid jaw, the extremity of which is in line with the axis of the movable jaw, an angular shoulder projecting above the said curved rigid jaw, at a point near its outer end, said movable jaw pivoted within the slot in the head, said latter jaw having a curved outer end of greater width than the pivot-ed portion, and provided at its curved outer end with a knife edge to co-act with the said shoulder for holding a pipe nut or the like, and means, comprising a bolt and a pin for adjusting the movable jaw, as set forth.
In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PETER ARMANTROUT.
