Description
S. W. WAKEFIELD.
Wrenches.
N0, 141,477I PatentedAugust, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
SAMUEL W. WAKEFIELD, OF KEOKUK, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,477, dated August 5, 1873; application filed May 16,1813.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. WAKE- vFIELD, of Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form p rt of this specification.
The awing represents a perspective view of the Wrench.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient-sized bolt-wrench possessing the requisite strength for light or heavy work; and consists of a tapered slot, the large end of which is toward the handle of the wrench, and the other end is closed, and the inner surface of one side of the wrench is serrated.
A is the Wrench, and B the handle. C is an elongated tapered slot, the large end of which is toward the handle, and the other end D is closed, and the inner surface cl of one side is serrated.
The largest bolts, which require the greatest force to operate them, are necessarily operated by the upper part of an open end wrench, Where pressure causes the greatest strain upon the jaws; but by making the Wrench with the large end of the slot to the handle, as shown in the drawing, the largest bolts are operated by that part of the wrench which is nearest to the handle, where the same degree of pressure causes the least strain up-V on the wrench. This arrangement, and the closing of the end, as described, greatly increase the strength of the wrench, which is of special advantage for heavy work requiring such strength as with an open end can be obtained only by making the tool so large as to render it inconvenient for use.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let.
ters Patent, is-
The wrench'A B having tapered slot C,With the large end of the slot toward the handle and the other end D closed,'and the side d serrated, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of May, 1873.
SAMUEL W. WAKEFIELD.
Witnesses HENRY W. RoTHERT, W. B. COLLINS.
