Description
ITO- 826,401. PATENTBD JULY 17, 1906.

APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 14,1905.

WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 17, 1906.
Application filed September 14,1905. S eria1N0.278,437.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. BULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lester, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented a'new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its object to provide a wrench which is very simple and cheap in construction and one that can be quickly adjusted with one hand with the greatest ofe'ase.
Another object of my invention is to provide a wrench that is so constructed that it can be used in close quarters with great advantage over other wrenches.
A further object of my invention is to provide a screw-driver in connection with one of the aws of the wrench inclosed in a handle, so that when the jaws are closed the screw driver will project out of the end of the hane dle so that it can be used.
With these objects in view my invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the wrench, showing the aws closed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the wrench, showing the jaws opened. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the .hollowhandle, which is provided with the flattened portion A, which tapers outwardly, forming a socket for the jaws and is provided with recesses on its inner sides adjacent its end, in which are secured by screws A ser- A slot A is formed in the flattened portion A adjacent the handle, through which the adjusting-ring B is adapted to be connected to one of-the jaws.
Arranged in the socket are jaws C and D, the inner side of the jaw D being serrated, and the jaws are provided with the usual heads C and D, having serrated edges C and D adapted to engage the block secured in the side of the socket and securely lock the jaw in the position desired. The jaws are provided with grooves C and D formed in the sides in which the lugs A and A. of the socket are adapted to work. The jaw C is the longest of the two and is provided with a screw-driver C formed on its end adapted to extend out through the opening A in the end of the handle when the jaws are closed. A reduced portion is found midway the length of the jaw C, on which the jaw D, which is provided with a reduced portion to correspond, is pivoted by the pin 0. The aw D is connected to the ring B by the screw B, which holds the jaw in place. A reduced portion is formed on the edge of each jaw, in
which are secured the flat springs C and D, which have the tendency to throw the jaws apart, so that they will always be open, allow ing the jaws to be quickly adjusted to suit the size of nut desired by shoving the ring back and forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wrench of the kind described, the combination with a handle provided with a tapering socket provided with detachable serrated blocks of a pair of jaws pivoted together adapted to slide back and forth in said socket springs arranged in said socket, adapted to throw the pivoted jaws against the serrated block and a ring surrounding said handle connected to one of the jaws for moving said aws, for the purpose described.
2. In a wrench of the kind described, the combination with a hollow handle provided with a tapering socket having serrated edges, of a pair of jaws pivoted together provided with serrated edges, arranged in said socket, springs arranged on each side of the jaws in "the socket, adapted to throw the serrated edges of the jaws in engagement with the serrated edges of the handle one end of one of said jaws extending out through one end of the handle and means for adjusting the jaws in said socket for the purpose described.
3. In a wrench of the kind described the combination with a hollow handle provided with a tapering socket provided with detachable, serrated blocks adjacent its outer end,
of a pair of spring-actuated jaws provided with serrated edges pivoted together, arranged in said socket, lug projecting in- -wardly from the socket working in grooves in the jaws, and a ring connected to one of the a ring surrounding said portion connected to one of the jaws by a screw passing through the slot, for the purpose described.
- CHARLES C. BULL;
jaws for adjusting the j aws, for the purpose described.
4. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a handle provided witha 5 tapering socket, of a pair of spring-actuated Witnesses:
jaws arranged in said socket, a slot formed in JOHN HORN, the flattened portion adjacent the handle and JoHN ROHLFF'Q
