Description

A. E. LINDSLEY.
Wrenches.
10,148,965 Patented March24,1a74.
NITED STATE AARoN n. LINDsL'nY, on PAw PAw, MicnicAN.
IMPROVMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,965, dated March 24, 1874; application led November 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON E. LINnsLEY, of Paw Paw, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a monkeywrench, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which is shown. a longitudinal view of the wrench.
A represents the ordinary straight bar, with stationary jaw B and the handle C. On the upper end of the handle is a ferrule, D,which screws lirmly upon the bar A. B represents the sliding' jaw, moving upon the bar A. This jaw is provided with a frame-work, E, also sliding on the bar A, and provided on the back of the said bar with a toothed or corrugated face, a. In the under side, at the back end of the stationary jaw B, is hinged a bar, G, which has a toothed or corrugated face, b, to lock with the face a of the sliding jaw. At its opposite end it is beveled or sloped, as seen in the drawings, for the purpose of presenting a suitable surface to the eccentricdever to bear upon. This bar runs parallel with the bar A to the ferrule D, and serves to hold the sliding jaw at any desirable point. The hinged bar also serves as a brace between the head or jaw B, where itv is hinged, and the ferrule, which is intended to greatly lessen the strain on the head and bar. The ferrule also answers for the purpose of holding the strain which may be made upon the brace named above, and it is provided with a tenon or spur, 1,to which an eccentric, H, is pivoted. This eccentric or eccentric lever holds the hinged bar or brace in place to lock the sliding jaw at any given point on the bar, the hinged bar being forked at its lower end, and straddling the tenon or spur d between the eccentric and the bar.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim `as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the hinged bar G, constructed with an extended bearing-surface, with the eecentriclever H, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of sliding jaw B, with its extension, E, bar A, hinged bar G, and eccentric-lever H, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AARON E. LINDSLEY.
