SPECIFICATION formingv part of Letters Patent No. 611,771, d t d O t b 4, 1898. Application filed January 4, 1898. Serial No. 665,529. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL A. CHENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central Park, in the county of Gallatin and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to wrenches of the sliding-jaw type; and the object is to improve the construction shown in Letters Patent No. 581,267, granted to me on the 27th day of April, 1897.
WVith this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts,which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the yoke. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the clamping-block, and Fig. V4: is a top plan view of the sliding jaw.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the handle, which is provided with serrations or teeth on its under side and with a fixed jaw 2.
3 denotes the sliding jaw, provided with an extension 4, formed with a recess 5. In this recess is pivoted a cam lever 6, which bears against a movable serrated clamping-block 7 located in the recess. It is evident that when this clamping-lever is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 the block will be caused to engage with the serrations on the under side of the handle, and thereby lock the jaw in the desired adjustment. When the handle is swung down in a position opposite to that shown in Fig. 1, the lever frees itself from the block and the block drops from engagement with the handle. In order to prevent this block dropping too far or unevenly, which would make it difficult to reclamp the parts, I provide a spring 8, one end of which is secured against the end wall of the recess and the other end of which projects upwardly and exerts sufficient pressure upon the block to clamp it against the opposite wall of the recess. It is thus evident that when the camlever is released from engagement with the block the block will not follow the lever and bind in the recess, but will be held ready to be again operated upon by the lever.
It is a well-known fact that wrenches of this character are subject to much wear and tear, and in order to compensate for this I provide a yoke 9, made, preferably, of spring metal, that has its ends fitted in recesses 10 of the sliding-jaw extension.
11 denotes a set-screw that works through the extension and by means of which the yoke may be forced downward to take against the looseness caused by the wear of the parts.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not .upper edge of the wrench to take up any I desire to be confined to the same, as such.-
changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pate is In a wrench, the combination with a handle and its rigid jaw, said handle being providedwith teeth or serrations, of a sliding jaw provided with an extension having a recess, a cam-lever pivoted in said recess, a
. toothed or serrated clamping-block located in said recess, and a spring having one end secured to one of the walls of said recess, and its upper end free and bearing against the clamping-block, substantially as set forth.
