UNITED STATES PATENT OE IcE.
GEORGE W. ANDERSON, OF WAINRIGHT, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK O. OWENS, OF WAY CROSS, GEORGIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,512, dated December 14, 1897.
I Application filed May 15I 189']. Serial No. 636,788. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. ANDERSON, of Wainright, in the county of Charlton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is the production of a simple, durable, and efficient wrench the movable jaw of which can be readily adj nsted to any desired position and which when so adjusted will be rigidly locked in place by the compression of the handle of the Wrench.
To the accomplishment of these and other objects subordinate thereto my invention con sists in providing two series of teeth upon 0pposite sides of the wrench-shank and a slot extending through said shank and within which is designed to move longitudinally with respect to the wrench a comparatively thin jaw-shank, uniting the movable jaw in engagement with the teeth on one side of the shank with a toothed handle upon the opposite side of the'shank.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my wrench, showing the toothed jaw and handle out of engagement with the shank and in position to be adjusted. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the movable jaw fixed in its adjusted position by the compression of the jaw-handle against the handle of the wrench. Fig. 3is a central longitudinal section through the subject-matter of Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is an edge view from the handle side of the wrench.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates the shank of the wrench, provided with a head 2 and handle 3 and with an intermediate slot at.
5 and 6 indicate two series of ratchet-teeth the teeth 10, formed on the inner side of the handle 12 of the movable jaw, the movable jaw and handle being located upon opposite and itshandle will disengage the teeth upon the opposite faces of the shank and permit the wrench to be adjusted to receive an article of any size or shape Within predetermined limits, and that when the required adjustment has been secured the movable jaw willv be fixed in such adjusted position by urging the handle of the movable jaw in the direction of the handle of the wrench. The result is that this entire manipulation of the tool will be accomplished with one hand, as the handles can be readily sepai ated by the hand which holds the wrench, and the compression of the handle as the Wrench is grasped will cause the locking of the parts and enable the wrench to be employed for the purpose of turning a pipe, nut, bolt-head, or the like.
While the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described appears to be preferable, I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction specified, but reserve the right to change, modify, or vary them at will within the scope of my invention.
What I claim is- In a wrench, the combination of a jaw whose shank is longitudinally slotted and provided with notches upon both sides, with a second jaw connected to its shank by a web which passes through the slotted shank, said jaw and shank being notched for engagement with the adjacent portions of said slotted shank, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
G. W. ANDERSON.
