' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CONRAD FARNEB, OF MILWAUKEE, VISOONSIN.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,444, dated January 4, 1887.
Application filed June 21, 1886. Serial No. 205,765. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CONRAD FRNER, of
Milwaukee, in t-he county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description ot' said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters origures of reference mark ed thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the peculiar form and construction of the parts of lthe device to which it relates, and in the arrangement and adjustment of these parts with reference to each other.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a wrench embodying my invention, parts being broken away to expose interior parts to view. Figs. 2, 3, and 4t are details.
A straight bar, A, is provided'with a face on its outer end adapted to serve as one of the jaws of the clutch of the wrench. This face is preferably roughened or serrated, furnishing a friction-surface of great power. Onthe rear or top side of the bar A is a serrated or toothed rack, C, for the use hereinafter stated.
B is asleeve fitted to and sliding freely on the' bar A.- An independent jaw, E, the face F of which is located in front of and opposite to the face B, is preferably roughened or serrated, 'furnishing a powerful friction-surface. The jaw Evhas a rearwardly-,extending arm, G, which is pivoted in the top ofthe sleeve D, whereby thej aw E is permitted to swing outwardly and inwardly from and 'to the face B of the bar A.
A small coiled-wire spring, H, is preferably inserted between the rear end of the arm G and the top of the sleeve D, whereby the jaw E is held yieldingly to position directly in front of the face B.
In the top of the sleeve l), opposite to the rack C, there is an aperture, I, in'which a latch or stop-block, J, is fitted and moves freely in and out. This block J is provided in its bottom or inner surface with teeth and grooves corresponding with those in the rack C, whereby this block is adapted to clutch with the rack C and hold the sleeve D firmly in position on the bar A. The block J is also provided with a longitudinal aperture, K, into whichthe key Lfis inserted through an ,aperture, M, therefor in the end of sleeveA D, in which aperture and in the corresponding aperture, N, in the end of-sleeve D at the farther sdeof aperture I the key Lis supported and rotates. A feather, O, which forms a part of the key L, is adapted to impinge against the walls of the aperture K, which aperture Kis so located in the block that when the featherO is turned down toward the bar A it forces the block J against and locks it upon the bar A.
equivalent means, though the handle may read- 7o ily be made simply an extension of the bar A. By reason of the sliding y movements which the sleeve D and the thereto-attached jaw E has on the bar A, this device is adapted to grasp nuts or bolts of varyingsizes, and by reason of the additional swinging motion of the jaw E, and the angular clasping-power thereby provided for, this device is also adapted for use as a pipe-wrench..
Vhat I claim as new, and by Letters Patent, is-
1. Inawrench, the barA,thethereon-formed rack O, and the sleeve D, sliding on arm A and supporting the thereto-pivoted arm G, in combination with the movable stop-block J, the key L, and feather O thereon, all constructed and arranged substantially as described. y
2. The combination of a bar, A, having a` face on its outer end and a rack, C, on its back, 'with the swinging arm G, having a jaw-face, F, the movable sleeve D, to which the arm G desire to secure is pivoted, the spring H, inserted between the rear end of arm G and sleeve D, movable stopblockJ, and the therein-inserted key L, having .feather O, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
CONRAD FARNER.
