Description
J. H. GUILEY.
PIPE WRENGH.
Patented Sept. 27, 1887.
f UNITE STATES JACOB H. GUILIIY, OF EAST SAGINAW, MICHIGAN.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,752, dated September 2'7, 1887.
Application filed November so, 1886. Serial No. 220.295. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB H. GUILEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Saginaw,in,the county of Saginaw and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my pipe -wrench open. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the dog. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the upper end of the lever. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sliding jaw.
My invention relates to pipe-wrenches; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and upper end of which is recessed, forming ears J, between which the shank B of the upper jaw is pivoted eccentrically at a, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This handle Kis also constructed with an arm, L, branching from its upper end, which arm has a rounded extremity, G, adapted to engage with a hook, H, formed on the lower part of the jaw-block D.
To the back of the handle K,I secure abowspring, S, the upper end of which presses against the back of the j aw-block D, so as to operate to separate the jaws to their fullest extent when unrestrained.
Now it will be observed that in the act of gripping a pipe the arm L slides against the bottom of the jaw-block D toward the hook H, and thus the two jaws are forcibly caused to firmly grip the pipe. \Vhen pressure on the handle is relieved, the spring S will separate the jaws. 7
Having described my invention, I claim-- A pipe-wrench consisting of the handle K, having ears J and an arm, L, a jaw, C, on a shank which is pivoted to said handle between its ears, a jaw-block, D, having a jaw, E, a hook, H, and receiving through it the shank of the jaw O, and a spring, S, all constructed and adapted to operate substantially as described In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J A0013 H. GUILEY.
XVitnesses: 1
WM. G. FORREST, CHARLES HUEBNER.
