Description

(No Model.) 7
J. H. STI LES.
Patented Mar. 3,1891.
WRENCH.
UNITED STATE-s PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. STILES, OF GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO MILLROY NEFF, OF SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 447,379, dated March 3, 1891. Application filed October 13, 1890; Serial No. 367,959. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. STILEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Cove Springs, in the county of Clay and State of Florida, have invented a newand useful Vrcnch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and it has for its object to constrncta device of this class which shall be simple, durable, and in: expensive, and which may be used equally well as a nut-wrench or as a pipe-wrench, and which may be conveniently adj usted to'operate upon pipes of various sizes.
The invention with these ends in view consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wrench embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2.
The stock of my improved wrench is composed of the handle 1, having the jaw 4, which is provided with a vertical slot 2, forming the side pieces or cheeks 3 The latter are connected by a transverse pin 5.
G designates the adjustable jaw, which is mounted upon a shank 7, which latter is inserted between the flanges 3 3 in such a manner as to be capable of sliding between the jaw 4 and the pin 5. The shank 7 is provided with a series of transverse perforations 9, to receive a pin 10, which is mounted at one end of the handle 11, which latter is pivoted to one side of the shank or handle of the Wrench. The flanges .3 3 are provided with perforations 12 for the passage of the said pin, which latter is retained in position by means of a spring '13, arranged under the end of the han dle 11. A flat spring 14: is arranged between the flanges 3 3 under a pin 15 in such amanner as to bear against the rear side of the shank '7, carrying the jaw 6. The adjacent;-
faces of the jaws are provided with teeth or serrations to enable them to take a firm bite upon the pipe that is to be operated upon. The lower end of shank 7 is provided with a lug 16, which is for the purpose of preventing the shank '7,fro1n being entirely withdrawn, the said lug serving to abut against the transverse pin 5.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. By depressing the lower end of the handle 11 the pin 10 may be lifted out of the transverse perforation in the shank 7,
thus enabling the latter to be adjusted to apthe greater the force that is exerted upon the handle of the wrench the more firmly will the jaws grip the object that is being operated upon.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a wrench, the combination of a handle having a jaw vertically slotted to form side pieces or cheeks, the pin connecting the lat ter, a jaw mounted upon a shank arranged to slidebetween said cheeks under said pin, and means for retaining the said shank in position pivotally, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the handle hating the jaw slottedvertically to form side pieces or cheeks, a pin connecting the latter, ashank mounted between said side pieces or cheeks and carrying the movable jaw and provided with transverse perforations, and a pivot-ed rod or handle'carrying a pin adapted to extend through the perforations in the sliding shank and through corresponding perforations in theside pieces or cheeks, substantially as set forth.
3. The combinationof the handle having the jaw slotted vertically to form side pieces or checks, the transverse pin connecting the latter, the sliding transverseiy-perforated my oWnI have hereto afiixed my signature in shank carrying the movable jaw,a spring arpresence of two Witnesses. ranged to press said shank, and a transverse m pin mounted upon a spring-actuated handle JOHN 5 ILEb 5 to retain said shankin position pivotally and \Vitnesses:
adjustabiy, substantially as set forth. H. S. SAPP,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as (X FABIAN LAW.
