' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. WEATHERLY, OF FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
WRENCH.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. WEATHERLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Vorth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench which will be readily adjustable so as to fit a nut of any size and one which will be held securely on the nut when engaged thereon.
WVith the above and other objects in view my invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction and operation an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the device, open and in position to engage on a nut. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view showing the wrench closed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the wrench handle which is provided with a suitable jaw, 2, integral therewith and projecting laterally from one end thereof.
The numeral 3 designates a sliding jaw which is carried by the wrench handle and is designed to oppose jaw 52, and these two j aws are arranged to grip the nut from opposite sides. This jaw 3 is slidably secured to the handle 1 by means of oblong guides 4 and 5 which are integral with said jaw and embrace said handle. Guide 5 is somewhat longer than the width of handle 1 so as to allow the rear end of jaw 3 to play laterally from said handle, as shown in Fig. 1.
The numeral 6 refers to an elbow shaped lever which is pivoted to the handle 1 at the point of its elbow. The handle 1 is provided with a plurality of perforations 7, alined lengthwise, so that lever 6 may be adjusted on the handle.
The numeral 8 refers to a link which is hinged at one end to the front end of lever 6, and at its other end to the rear end of jaw 3 and through which said jaw is moved back and forth, along the handle, by the manipu lation of lever 6.
The contracting sides of handle 1 and jaw Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 30, 1910. Serial No. 600,061.
Patented Sept. 5, 1911.
3 are provided with .rack teeth, the rack teeth of the aw extending only a short distance from its rear end but those of the handle extending as far along its side as may be desired. These teeth are arranged to engage with and be disengaged from each other, in the manner and for the purposes to be hereinafter set forth.
When lever 6 is manipulated, in the manner shown in Fig. 1, the rack teeth of jaw 3 are disengaged for the corresponding teeth of handle 1 and said jaw may then be moved in either direction to the desired point, by the further manipulation of said lever. The wrench may then be engaged over the nut to be turned thereby and as said nut is turned its resistance against jaw 3 operates to force the rear end thereof against handle 1 and causes the respective teeth of said jaw and handle to engage, and the jaws are thus held immovable, relative to each other, until the wrench is removed from the nut and lever 6 again manipulated. The wrench may thus be quickly adjusted to accommodate it to nuts of varying sizes and when engaged on a nut the jaws will be firmly held in a fixed-relation to each other on said nut.
What I claim is 1. A device of the character described including a handle and an immovable jaw carried thereby, a sliding jaw also carried by said handle and having a limited lateral play relative thereto and disposed so as to oppose the immovable jaw, a hand lever pivoted to the handle, a link connecting said lever and sliding jaw, rack teeth carried by the contacting sides of said handle and said sliding jaw adapted to engage with each other and hold said handle and jaw in a fixed relation to each other.
2. A device of the character described including a handle and an immovable jaw carried thereby, a sliding jaw also carried by said handle and having a limited lateral play thereto and disposed to oppose the immovable jaw, a hand lever pivoted to the handle, a link connecting said lever and sliding jaw, rack teeth carried by the contacting sides of said handle and said sliding jaw adapted to engage with each other and hold said handle and jaw in a fixed relation to each other and means for adjusting said handle and said hand lever.
3. A device of the character described including a handle and a jaw carried by one .end thereof, a sliding jaw also carried by of said handle and said sliding jaw adapted to engage with each other and hold said handle and jaw in a fixed relation to each other and a series of holes carried by said handle and hand lever whereby their rela- 10 tion with each other may be determined.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE B. WEATHERLY.
