Description

No. 897,767. PATENTED SEPT. 1, 1908.
H. R. & R. J. MUNGE.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 14, 1906.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY R. MUNOE AND ROBERT J. MUNOE, OF WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
FRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY R. MUNoE and ROBERT J. MUNoE, citizens of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in renches; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to wrenches and particularly to quick adjusting pipe wrenches, and the objects are to construct a wrench which will be simple in construction, quick in the adjustment to difierent sized pipes and at the same time-cheap to manufacture. WVith these objects in view, we will now describe our invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of our wrench, the dotted lines showing the adjustable jaw thereof opened to receive a larger sized pipe. Fig. 2, is a detail side elevation of the adjustable jaw removed from the handle part of the wrench.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the rawmgs.
A, represents the handle or upper jaw section of the wrench, which is provided in its forward underpart with serrations or teeth for engaging a pipe. This section A, is also provided with a vertical longitudinal opening a, and holes Z) in the opposite sides of said opening, the purpose of which will appear hereinafter.
B, is the under-jaw of the wrench and is so shaped as to form a shank c, which is adapted to be inserted in the opening a. This shank c, is provided with a series of holes d, which are adapted to register with the holes I), of the upper-jaw section. This lower jaw section is pivotally held in position by means of a pivot e, which passes through the holes I), in the upper jaw section and the holes d, in the shank of the lower jaw section. Pivoted or otherwise secured to the pivot c, is a spring f, the opposite end of which is rigidly secured to the handle or upper jaw portion of the wrench.
We will now describe the operation of our invention which is as follows: The wrench is set for the size pipe to be worked by removing the pivot e, and adjust the lower-jaw to fit the pipe, then replace the pin and everything is in readiness. The wrench is placed over or around a pipe with the under-j aw in such a position that the leverage will be drawing on the lower-j aw, which causes the wrench proper to take hold of the pipe very securely, and the more power exerted on the handle, the tighter the jaws grasp the pipe.
This wrench will be found to be very convenient in working in. corners and such places, as its action is somewhat similar to a ratchet in such places.
Having described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is.
The combination in a wrench consisting of a handle or upper jaw portion and a lower jaw portion terminating in a shank which is provided with a series of holes for registering with the holes in the sides of the upper jaw portion, of a spring rigidly secured to the side of the handle or upper jaw portion at one end and to the pivot at its opposite end, said pivot being adapted to enter said holes in the upper jaw portion and shank of the lower jawportion for holding said lower jaw portion in position, together with serrations formed in said upper and lower jaw portions headed in opposite directions to each other, all substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
