IMPROVEMENT IN DRAWING-KNIVES.

Specification forming part of Letttrs Patent No. 142,720, dated September 9, 1873; application filed June 9, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELMON PARKER, of Chambersburg, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement on aDrawing-Knife; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of the speciication, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View, Fig. 2 the guide-bar, and Fig. 3 the cap.

To enable others to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I attach to a drawing-knife, made similar to a common drawing-knife, (see Fig. 1,) a small The slots enable me to move the bar backward or forward, as wanted.

In order to regulate the thickness of the shaving, I put two setscrews, b b, Fig. 1, through the bar over the knife, and, by turning them, I can raise or lower the bar and keep it in place'i'or a thick or thin shaving. In order to shave smoothly cross-grained wood, l screw a cap, Fig. 3, tightly on the upper side of the knife, within the bar between the elbows, (see Fig. 1,) (made similar to a cap to a planebit,) with two screws passing through two slots,c c, Fig. 3; thus it can be moved for a line or coarse shaving. A drawing-knife made in -this manner can be used as a common drawing-knife; butwhen there is any cross-grain in the wood, the end with the cap and bar can be used, and, by so doing, prevent tearing up the grain ot' the wood. lt also can be used to smooth many kinds ot' work quite as well as a plane will do it.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
