JOHN JONES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-BOLTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,211, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JONES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door- Bolts, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents my improved bolt as applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section, through the line 00 w, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front view of the bolt-plate, showing the locking device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved door-bolt which shall be so constructed that the bolt can be locked in position' both when thrown and when drawn back, and which can be easily and conveniently applied to a door. The invention consists in the slot in the bolt-plate, enlarged at both ends, and the rotary flattened stem, in combination with the bolt, the spring, and the slotted tube, as hereinafter fully described.
A is a tube closed at its inner end, and which is inserted in a hole bored in the door, and in which is inserted a bolt, B, which is pushed and held outward by a coiled spring, 0, placed in the inner end of the tube B. D is a stem, upon the outer end of whichis formed a thumb-piece or knob, and the inner end of which passes through a slot in the side of the tube A and screws into a hole in the bolt B. E is a plate which is secured to the door, is concaved or recessed, and has a slot formed through it for the passage of the stem D, the
recess in said plate allowing the thumb-piece to be flush with or below the surface to which the plate E is attached. The end parts of the slot in the plate E are enlarged, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the part of the stem D that passes through the said slot is flattened, as shown in Fig. 3, so that when moved into the enlarged end parts of the slot and turned one quarter around it cannot enter the narrow middle part of said slot Without being turned one quarter around in one or the other direction. This enables the bolt to be readily locked both when drawn in and when thrown out.
The bolt may be made long, as shown in the drawing, to adapt it for use as abase-bolt 5 or it may be made short, to adapt it for use as a side or catch bolt. In the latter case the thumb-piece may be replaced by a knob.
By detaching the knob-stem D the bolt B may be reversed, thus adapting the bolt for use upon a right or left hand door, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The slot in the plate E, enlarged at both ends, and the rotary flattened stein D, in combination with the bolt B, spring 0, and slotted tube A, substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN J ONES.
