BARREL-COVER LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 29, 1915.
Application filed April 27, 1914. Serial No. 834,859.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL BEE BEE MED- LOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mortons Gap, in the county of Hopkins and State of Kentucky have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Cover Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a barrel cover latch and has for its principal object the production of a simple and efiicient means which is adapted to be carried by a sectional barrel covefor normally retaining the cover in a closed position.
Another object of this invention is the production of a barrel cover latch comprising a bracket having a pivotally secured lever for the purpose of engaging a pin for holding a cover in a closed position, said bracket being adapted to fit upon round surfaces and cause said latch to extend at right angles to said pin.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a barrel showing the cover carried thereby which is provided with the latch. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cover showing the latch carried thereby. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the bracket illustrating the manner in which the lever is carried thereby. Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective View of the top or cover showing the bracket member in perspective.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals 1 designates the body of a barrel which is adapted to have its top portion provided with this cover or top. This cover comprises the primary fixed section 1 and the auxiliary or hinged section 2. This fixed section 1 is provided with the depending annular flange 3 while the section 2 is provided with a similar flange 4 which is adapted to fit over the upper side portions of the barrel 1 for forming a closure therefor. This section 2 is secured to the fixed section 1 by means of the suitable hinges 5 which are secured by the securing means 6. This fixed section 1 is also provided with apertures 7 formed in the flange 3 through whlch securing means 8 may be passed for firmly securing the fixed section 1 upon the upper portion of the barrel 1. The flange 4 of the hinged section 2 is provided with a fixed handle 9 for facilitating the raising of the hinged section 2. Since the fixed section 1 is firmly secured to the upper portion of the barrel 1 the cover will be held in position so as to be raised and lowered in such a manner as to fit snugly over the upper portion of the barrel 1 and in this manner form a tight closure for the barrel for preventing any refuse from entering thereinto. The fixed section 1' is also provided with a lug 10 formed adjacent the hinged edge of the section 2 and therefore will prevent the hinged section 2 from moving beyond a per pendicular point when the same is swung to an open position. Therefore the tendency of this hinged section 2 will be to fall to a closed position as soon as the same is released. For the purpose of locking this hinged section 2 in a closed position there is'provided upon the flange 3 of the fixed section 1 a bracket 11 which comprises an arm 12 having a finger 13 extending at right angles thereto. This arm 12 is provided at its end with a curved portion 14 which is adapted to fit snugly upon the curved surface of the flange 3 to be fixedly secured thereto by means 15. The finger 13 terminates in a laterally extending lip 14 having an angularly extending car 15' which conforms in contour to the shape of the flange 3 and which is adapted to be secured thereto by securing member 16. The lip 14 is provided with the notched portion 17 adjacent which is formed the stop 18. The lever 19 is pivotally secured by means of the pin 20 to the finger 13 of the bracket. This pin 20 passes through the aperture 21 formed in the finger as disclosed in Fig. 1. The outer end of this lever 19 is provided with a head 22 having a shoulder 23 for engaging the fixed pin 24. carried by the flange 1 of the hinged section 2. The lever 19 is also provided with the fixed lifting knob 25 for facilitating the raising of this lever. When the hinged section 2 is in a closed position, as disclosed in Fig. 1, the fixed pin 24 will rest behind the shoulder 23 of the lever 19 since the bracket is fixedly secured to the latching fixed section 1, the hinged section 2 will be held in a closed position. WVhen, hoW- ever, it is desired to open this hinged section 2, the lever 19 may be raised by means of the lifting knob 25 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The hinged section may then be raised by means of the handle 9 for allowing access into the interior of the barrel 1. As soon as the hinged section 2 falls to a closed position upon the barrel 1, the lever 19 will fall to a closed position for this hinged section upon the upper portion of the barrel 1 and will at this time rest upon the stop 18.
It is, of course, obvious that this cover may be used upon a barrel or upon a tub where it is desired to allow access to be easily had to the interior of the receptacle and at the same time normally causing the upper portion of the receptacle to be covered to prevent the refuse from entering thereinto. It will also be noted that the several portions may be provided or held in position by rivets, bolts or any desired securing means without departing from the spirit of this invention.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and efficient device has been produced for forming a closure for the upper portion of a receptacle and which is provided with a bracket which is so formed as to fit snugly upon the rounded outer surface of the cover and which is adapted to carry simple and efficient means for holding the top in a closed and latched position upon the receptacle. 7 i
In a barrel cover latch, the combination of a bracket, said bracket comprising an arm terminating in a curved portion, said curved portion being adapted to be secured to the outer periphery of a barrel cover, an integral finger extending at right angles to said arm, a lip extending at right angles to said finger and terminating in an ear, said car being adapted to be fixedly secured to the same section of a barrel cover as is the curved portion of said arm, said finger being held at a spaced distance from a barrel cover, said lip provided with a notched portion, a latch lever pivotally secured to said finger and passing through said notched portion, a pin, said pin being adapted to be secured to one section of a barrel cover other than the section upon which said bracket is secured, said latch lever being adapted to engage said pin for holdingtwo sections of a barrel cover in a closed position, said latch lever extending at right angles to said pin whereby said lever will exert a direct pull upon said pin when in a latched engagement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
