ALBERT J. NULL, OF GARY, INDIANA.
LOCK FOR RECEPTACLE-LIDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed February 23, 1915. Serial No. 10,026.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. NoLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Receptacle- Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cans and other receptacles especially adapted for holding garbage, ashes and the like, and its object is to provide a novel and improved lock for securing th lids of such receptacles.
The herein stated object is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a receptacle equipped with the lid-locking device; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 isa horizontal section on the line 83 of Fig. 1.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a sheet metal can provided with a top closure in the form of a lid 6 having a depending marginal flange as usual so that a tight closure of the can is effected, and provided with a handle 7. To the marginal flange of the lid, at diametrically opposite points, are secured lid-locking members, each of which members comprises a strip 8 having a longitudinal slot 9 provided, intermediate its ends, and on one side a short laterally extending and inclined branch 10. The strip is secured to the lid flange by a rivet or other suitable fastening 11, a washer 12 being mounted between the strip and the flange for spacing said strip from the flange. The side of the can body carries an outstanding bolt 13 extending through the slot 9 and serving as a pivot for the locking strip. This bolt carries two nuts 14 between which the strip is located, the inner nut serving to space the strip from the side of the can body. The locking strips 8 extend downward from the lid of the can, and the length of the slots 9 of said strips is such that the lid may be lifted off the can and swung sidewise and downward so as to lie close to one side thereof as shown dotted in Fig. 1, the locking strips swinging about the pivots 13. By a reverse operation the lid may be closed. The lateral slots 10 are so positioned that when the lid is closed down on the can, they come in line with the pivots 13, so that upon giving the lid a slight turn, said pivots enter said slots as shown in Fig. 1. The lid is now locked in closed position and it cannot be lifted and swung open until it is turned in a direction to take the pivots out of the slots 10. The inclination of these slots causes the lid to be drawn down to seat tightly when it is turned as hereinbefore described to bring the pivots into the slots.
The lid may be swung over to either side of the can, and in order to hold it in open position and to prevent it from swinging back to closed position when the can is tilted to empty the same, the side of the can body, at diametrically opposite points, carries spring catches 15 engageable with the lid flange when the lid is open as shown dotted in Fig. 1.
The device hereinbefore described is simple in construction, it can be readily applied to any ordinary can provided with a lid, and it effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed. The lid is securely locked, and at the same time it can be easily unlocked and swung open. The device also prevents loss or misplacement of the lid as it remains at all times attached to the can.
I claim:
The combination with a receptacle and its lid, of locking members for the lid secured to the same and extending therefrom along opposite sides of the receptacle, said members having longitudinal slots, pivots fixed to the sides of the receptacle and extending through the slots of the locking members, the length of said slots being such that the lid may be swung over sidewise to come alongside the receptacle, and said slots having laterally extending branches which are in line with the aforesaid pivots when the lid is closed and extend at an oblique angle to the slot in a direction to draw the lid down when it is turned to bring the pivots into the branches. I
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT J. NOLL.
Witnesses:
C. WV. HUsn, Furrz SOHAAL.
