To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that T, THO'EIAS B. VRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles and Holding and Looking Means Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention isto produce in connection with a receptacle or container for holding articles, unique and highly efficient holding means for the articles placed in the box and simple and efiicient means for locking the parts together.

The invention relates more particularly to holding and retaining devices and locking means for the upper and lower compartments of the receptacle, which are placed upon the inside of the compartments and are invisible when the receptacle is closed.

In carrying out this description, I will refer to the particular receptacle as a lunch box, altho it may be used for any other purpose.

In this accompanying drawing forming part of the specification:

The upper part or lid of the receptacle is marked 1, and the lower part 2, connected together by a hinge 3 of any suitable con struction. In its upper part 1, I show a vacuum bottle in position. The vacuum bottle is marked 4. In order to contain said vacuum bottle properly the upper compartment-of the receptacle is arched as shown at 5; the vacuum bottle 4 resting therein.

In the upper compartment I fasten, at point 6, a fastening device 7, of the shape shown; it is bent inwardly. and then backwardly at its loose end 8, and at said end 8 has a cut out integral catch part 9; at the Serial No. 531,428.

u per side at point 10, I connect a slightly curved wire retaining arm or finger 12. This retaining arm or finger 12 at its loose end 13, engages the catch part 9, from the under side thereof, so that when the bottle 4,;is in place, this fin er 12 impinges against said bottle and holds it intact. When it is desired to remove the vbottle the finger can he loosened and the bottle can be taken out. The fastening device 7 and finger 12 are usually made from springy mate'ial.

On the front side 14- of the lower part 2, I fasten a locking catch 15 bent over at the top to form a catch part 16, and I also cut out of the middle thereof an integral tongue 18, which passes thru the slot 17 of said front 14; of the lower compartment.

To look the box the upper part of lid 1,

is placed over the top of the lower part 2 and forced downwardly until the catch-l6 passes into the slot 19 in the loose nd 8, of the catch device 7. In this manner the two parts are tightly locked together.

In order to unlock the parts 1 and 2, pressure is exerted upon the tongue 18; it being pressed inwardly and being integral with the catch part 15, (which is made of springy material), forces said catch part 15 backwardly, until the catchltl is pushed out of the slot 19, and at this point the parts are unlocked. The top part then being free to be opened up and raised.

To the top part 1, at its upper extremity or face I attach, by riveting or otherwise, a name plate holder 20, having a part 21 into which the name can be placed upon card or the like; this name plate holder has upwardly extending ears 22, into which a handle 25 is connected, at each end thereof, so that it will swing.

These fastening and locking devices may be of any shape or contour and connected in the compartments in any preferred manner. It will be noted that all these retaining, fastening, and locking devices are on the inside of the compartments and are invisible when the box is closed, and that they all coact when the compartments are locked together to hold the contents in the upper chamber in a normal condition, at the same time interlocking and performing their functions.

The lower compartment 2, is usually employed for holding food or packages of any kind.

A bead as 20, is placed around the lower compartment near its top to limit the down- Ward travel of the top compartment 1 when it is placed over and onto said lower compartment 2.

While I have described one specific means for carr in m invention into eiiect it will is y a be readily understood that the same is capable of some modification without departing from the spirit of the invention and I believe that such modification will "fall within the scope out my specification and claims. What I claim new and my invention and desire to secure by Letters l atent is:

' 1. In combination with a receptacle including a body member and a cover member hinged to the same, of a first movable fastening element connected to one of said members, a second fastening element connected to the other member and engageable with the first fastening element for holding the cover in closed position, one or said elements being operable from the exterior or t e receptacle to permit the fastening elements to be disconnected, a container holding device connected to oneoi? said membe s and havin a free end, and means arr nged on one or said tastenin'gg; elements for engaging said :Jiree end for locking the container holding device in position.

2. The combination with are *eptacle having a hinged cover, of a movable fastening element connected to the receptacle and operable from the exterior of the latter, a

fastening element connected to the cover engageable with the first mentioned ening element for locking the cover in position,and a container holding device movably mounted in said cover and engageable with the fastening element of the cover for looking a containe in position within the cover.

8. The combination with a receptacle including a body member and a cover mem ber connected together, of latching means for holding the cover in position, and container holding; device for holding a container in one of said members, said latching means illnlnding an element ,engageable with and disengageable from said container holding device.

' The combination with a receptacle including a body and cover hingedly connected to the same, of a resilient hook connected to the body and operable from the exterior of said body, a resilient slotted member connected to the cover and provided with a hook, the first mentioned hook being adapted to engage the slot of the slotted member, and a container-holding device pivotally n'iounted in the cover and adapted to engage the hoolr oi: the slotted member for retaininga container within the cover.
