UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM OSCAR YANCEY AND CHARLES CAROLUS DU MESNIL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAT-PIN.
7 Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patented Nov. 25, 1913.
Application filed AprillZ, 1912. Serial No. 691,541.
United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
and has for its object the provision of a fastening means that will securely hold the hat;
in place to the exclusion of hat pins in ordinary use, and to prevent: the hat from be coining disfigured by the pin hole that re: sults from the use of the ordinary stlck plns.
employed.
Another object of our invention is the embodiment of a hat fastener of the class described whereby the on another when desired by the wearer.
Our invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a hat, partly in section, showing our improved hat fastener in place; and Fig. 2, a cross section through the hat fastener.
In the drawings, similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A indicates a hat of any ordinary construction, having the crown B to which our fastener is adapted to be secured.
The fastener is secured in place by means of brackets 1 and 2 having eyelets 3 and 4. respectively through which the brackets are sewed to the sides of the crown B, bracket 2 having inwardly extending arms 5 terminating in a loop 6 that acts as a journal for the shaft of the fastener to be hereinafter described. Bracket 1 is provided with a plate 7 having a laterally extending tubular casing 8 in which is mounted a coiled spring 9. The one terminal of the spring 9 is soldered or otherwise secured within the easing 8, while the other terminal of the spring projects exteriorly of the casing and is secured in any desired manner to the shaft 10.
10 indicates a shaft journaled in loops 6 and in the casing 8, and having the other end of spring 9 secured thereto, the end of the shaft 10 being extended through the plate 7 and havin its outer end 11 projecting through the slde of the hat crown and device may be quickly removed from one hat and replaced J provided with a suit-able ornamental button 12 havinga tubular shank 13 screwed thereon and adapted to be removed when it is desired to displace the fastener from the hat crown.
' 14' indicates pins secured to the shaft 10 adjacent to the loops 6 and easing 8 respec- V j tively, and wound spirally around said shaft Our invention relates to'devlces for securing womens hats 1n place on thelrheads,
and also inclined from one another as clearly shownuin Fig. 1. The shaft 10 has an offset portion 15 between said pins 14- to perunit rotation of the shaft without interfering with the arrangement of the hair of the wearen. u it In use, the hat is secured on the head by rotating the shaft 10, the button 12 being two pins 14 with their points inclined away from one another, as shown and described, all danger of scratching or injuring the scalp of the wearer, will be avoided, as they are far enough removed from one another to prevent engaging the top of the head and the hat may be seated securely on the head Without interfering with the operation of the pins. Furthermore, the offset portion 15 of the shaft 10 permits rotation of the shaft, without in any manner interfering with the arrangement of the hair on the wearers head, and also permits the hat to be seated securely on the head.
When it is desired to remove the fastener from the hat, the button 12 is unscrewed from the end 11 of the shaft 10, the brackets 1 and 2 unfastened from the inside of the crown, and the shaft 10 may then be easily drawn from engagement with the side of the crown without in any manner injuring the hat.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. In a hat fastener, shaft supporting brackets adapted to be secured to the crown of a hat, one of the brackets provided with .a plurality 'of resilient hair engaging -mein- "hers carried by sald shaft, sald splral spring directed laterally "extending tubular casing, I a splral spring mounted on said ca'snig and hold said fastening means in engaging position. 7 V e v w A hat fastener including a "pair of shaft supporting brackets adapted to. be mounted in the crown of a hat, one of said brackets being provided with an inwardly:
having one end fixedly secured internally" thereof, a shaft journaled in said bracket,
having itsother terminal secured to the said}; shaft and disposed to normally hold the hair; engaging members in a position of positive? engagement.
3'. A hat fastener including a pair of sup porting brackets adapted" to be secured in? the crown of a hat at diametrically oppo-i site points thereof, an inwardly extending; laterally directed tubular casing carried by I one olf said brackets, a spiral spring arranged 1n said caslng and having one terminal fixedly'secure'd thereto, a shaft 10111- .naled in said brackets and disposed for rotation Within the said tubular casing, the other end of said spiral spring being secured to said shaft, and a plurality of hair "engaging members carried by the said shaft and arranged spirally with relation to the ELI BRANDS, Anonrn PIKE.
