Description

C. W. MARTIN.
GEE STRAP. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 16.1918.
Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFI CLARK WILFRED MARTIN, OF NORTH UNION TOtVNSHIP, FAYETTE COUNTY, PENN- SYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ASA L. MARTIN, OF NORTH UNION TOWN- SHIP, vFAYETTE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA. V g
GEE-STRAP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK WILFRED MAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Union township, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, (New York city, temporarily, in the county of New York and Stateof New York,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gee-Straps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved gee strap, and has for its primary object to provide simple and effective means for securely holding a soldiers hat or head-piece against either vertical movement or sidewise slipping or displacement.
It'is another and more particular object of my invention to provide a gee strap for soldiers headwear consisting of two relatively adjustable sections, one of which is operatively engaged or connected with the hat, said sections extendingobliquely in a forward direction at opposite sides of the face and the other section having branches to extend horizontally above and below the chin.
It is also a further general object of my invention to provide a device for the above purpose which will be highly effective and reliable in practical use and capable of manufacture at relatively small cost.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination, and arrange ment of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating my improved gee strap in its applied position; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view strap detached from the hat.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 5 designates one section of the gee strap which is herein shown as having its ends extended through openings in the hat brim and extends rearwardly around the crown of the hat. The ends of the other strap section 6 are adapted to be adjustably connected to the downwardly and forwardly of the gee Specification of Letters Patent.
extending ends of the strap section 5 by means of buckles or other suitable means indicated at 7. The central portion of the strap section 6 is longitudinally split to provide branches 8 which are adapted to be disposed in spaced relation to each other and extend horizontally above and below the chin of the wearer, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The branches 8 are free one from the other between their connected end portions so that the same will readily adjust themselves to the chin of the wearer without imposing pressure upon the point of the chin so that the strap can be used with comfort by the wearer. These branches 8 instead of being formed in the manner explained may, if desired, be separably constructed and stitched or otherwise suitably secured to separate end sections or extensions for connection with the strap section 5.
While the two sections 5 and 6 of the gee strap are preferably formed of leather, it is to be understood that in practice these parts might likewise be formed of canvas, felt or any other suitable flexible material. I have herein shown-one manner in which the section 5 of the gee strap may be connected to the hat or head-piece to securely hold the same upon the head, but if preferred this section 5 may be permanently secured to the hat or operatively connected thereto in any other approved manner. The branches 8 of the section 6 of the device extending across and above or below the chin of the wearer effectively obviate any and all possibility of either vertical lifting of the hat from the head or sidewise displacement thereof. The several strap sections may be of any preferred length and width.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use and several advantages of the device will be clearly and fully understood. It will be seen that the invention can be very easily and quickly applied and is of such construction that it will not cause the wearer any serious inconvenience or discomfort. The hat or other head-piece is securely retained Patented Sept. 14, 1920.
in position against all possibility of being blown off or accidentally displaced. The device in its entirety is of such simple construction that it can be manufactured and sold at comparatively small cost. It is also very durable, as well as serviceable and convenient for the purpose in view.
lVhile I have herein shown one practical embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I nevertheless reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A gee strap adapted to serve as the holding strap of a hat comprising two separable sections, the extremities of one section being adjustably secured to the extremities of the second section, the strap when the sections are connected being substantially continuous, the central portion of one of the sections having a longitudinally disposed slit, the portions of said section at opposite sides of the slit providing branches to engage above and below the chin of the wearer.
2. In combination with a headgear provided with a brim, said brim having openings at opposite sides of the headgear, a gee strap comprising two separable sections, the intermediate portion of one section resting upon the brim and having its end portions threaded through the openin s, the extremities of the second section eing engaged with the extremities of the first section, the central portion of the second portion having a longitudinally disposed slit, the portions of said section at opposite sides of the slit providing branches to engage above and below the chin of the wearer.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARK \VILFRED MARTIN.
