SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent-No. 589,888, dated September 14, 18 97.

To all 1072 0112, it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD ALEXAN- DER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to hat-fasteners, the object of the same being to provide a simple acter which is permanently secured to the hat and cannot become lost and which will dispense with the use of the ordinary hat-pins now commonly employed.

A further object of the invention is to provideahatfastener which will effectively hold the hat against slipping and which will not disarrange the hair on the sides.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved fastener shown applied to a hat upon the head of the wearer. Fig. 2 is a similar View of a hat with my improvement applied, showing the fastener attached thereto upon each side. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the fastener itself. Fig. 4.11s an edge view of the same, and Fig. 5-is a longitudinal section through the same.

My improved fastener 1 is made up of a strip 2 of elastic material in a double fold, with a metallic ring or eye 3 secured to one end thereof by means of a spring-clip 4,01amping the two folds of material of which the strip 2 is made at a point adjacent to that at which the ring or eye is attached.

By means of the ring or eye 3 my improved to the hat 5 011 opposite sides thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. At a point a short distance from the lower end of the strip 2 is attached a hook 6,

. In applying the hook 6 to the strip2 the arms thereof. are inserted between the two folds of material of which said strip 2 is made, with the bent portion '7 lyingin the position shown. At a point near the bend 8 in the arms 8 8 a cross-bar 9 is attached, which also lies in place between the folds of which the strip 2 is made. The said hook is held in place by means of metallic spring-clips 1O 10, which are located, respectively, on opposite sides of the cross-bar 9 and the bent portion '7. The position of the hook may be adjusted by moving the clips 10 10 in one direction or the other. The strip 2 extends slightly below the hook 6, as shown at 11, forming a handle by means of which the device may be applied.-

In using my improved fastener the hat is placed .upon the head in the proper position, and then the handles 11 aregrasped, stretching the strip 2, and the hooks 6 6 are then inserted into the hair of the wearer on opposite sides of the head. lrVhen in place,the hat 5 is held firmly and securely and cannot be blown off or the position thereof on the head changed accidentally. Furthermore, the use of the ordinary hat-pins, which produce uglylooking holes in the hat, is dispensed with.

My improved fastener may be made of any suitable size and of any suitable color, according to the size of the hat to be held and the taste of the wearer.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a hat, of a fastening device therefor consisting of a strip of elastic material folded back upon itself, a ring or eye upon one end of said strip by means of which the same maybe permanently secured to said hat, a hook made of a single piece of wire bent at its central point, forming two parallel arms which are themselves bent rearwardly, a cross-bar connecting the same at a point adjacent to the bent portion of said arms, the central portion of said hook and said cross-bar lying between the folds of said strip, and means for preventing the slipping of said hook on said strip, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination Witha hat, of a fastening device therefor consisting of a strip of elastic material folded back upon itself, a ring or eye upon one end of said strip by means of Which the same maybe permanently secured to said hat, a metallic clip for holding said ring in place upon said strip, a hook made of a single piece of wire bent at its central point forming two parallel arms which are themselves bent rearwardly, a cross-bar connecting the same at a point adjacent to the bent portion of said arms, the central portion of said hook and said cross-bar lying between the folds of said strip, and metallic spring-clips located upon opposite sides of said crossbar and the bent portion of said hook by which said arms are formed, substantially as and for the purpose described.
