Description

(No Model.)
D. E. EGKERT.
STAPLE.
No. 434,436. Patented Aug. 19, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL E. EOKERT, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
STAPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 434,436, dated August 19, 1890. Application filed June 10, 1890. Serial No. 354,892. (No model.)
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. ECKERT, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door-fasteners, and more particularly to the staple thereof; and it has for its object to provide an improved staple which can be readily driven into the desired place, butwhich cannot be easil y withdrawn, and which does not have to be clinched upon the other side.
I form a staple with a single prong or leg, which is roughened or notched and provided with a driving-head which has an opening to receive the look after the hasp has been placed over the staple, and a space between the head and the shank of the staple to receive the hasp.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The novelty resides in the peculiarities of construction of the staple, as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved staple. Fig. 2 is a view showing the hasp engaged with the staple as in use.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the staple, which is formed with a shank portion, which is notched, roughened, or provided with barbs, as shown at a, with a sharp driving-point b,
and near its outer end with an enlarged tapered portion 0, which terminates in a square shoulder at, as shown, between which and the inner square face f of the head B is a space g, in which the hasp is designed to fit, as shown in Fig. 2. The'head is formed with an opening 7.", to receive the lock, as shown, and this head is formed with an enlarged driving-surface, so that the staple may be readily and easily driven into the desired place A staple thus formed is not liable to be bent as is one with two legs or prongs, and the barbs render it very ditlicult to withdraw the same after once being driven into place, although they do not retard its inward movement. The enlarged portion serves'to prevent weakening of the staple by the formation of the recess of space g to receive the hasp. The outer face of the head may be rounded, if desired,to give it a more finished appearance.
What I claim as new is 1. A staple having its shank'provided with barbs and its head with an opening to receive the lock, substantially as specified.
2. A staple having its shank provided with barbs and its head with an opening, and a space between the head and the shank to receive a hasp, substantially as specified.
A staple having its shank provided with barbs and its head with an opening, with a space between the head and shank for the reception of a hasp, with an enlargement at the point of the shank near said space, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The staple described, having a single leg provided with barbs, a sharpened point, a driving-head having an opening, a tapered enlargement, and aspace between the enlargement and the inner face of the head, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof-I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' DANIEL E. EOKERT.
Witnesses:
